If you’ve always wanted to make some art, it’s time to channel your inner Kahlo and go for it. The AGO is offering a number of courses this summer, and we’ve selected some of the best. You’ll be a pro by autumn.

Drawing. Drinks.
Friday, July 8 – July 29, 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM (4 weeks)

Learn to draw, and enjoy a drink while doing it! Explore a variety of drawing techniques using original paintings, sculptures and installations in the AGO collections as starting points. Artist-instructors will demonstrate techniques and concepts and lead the group through exercises geared toward deepening your understanding of works of art and the evolution of imagery. Each class starts over drinks and conversation.

Introduction to Digital Painting
Wednesday, July 6 – July 27, 10:30 AM – 1:00 PM (4 weeks)
Members $170 | Public $225
Learn how to make art using your iPad! Using the AGO’s collections and exhibitions as inspiration, explore this new artistic medium and learn techniques such as layering, drawing and painting using the iPad app, ArtRage. Students can bring their own iPads, or use one of the AGO’s iPads.

City Explorations: Traveller’s Sketchbook
Tuesday, July 5 – July 26, 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM or 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM (4 weeks)

Planning a vacation? Learn quick drawing and painting techniques in a range of media that will capture your favourite architectural or landscape details, or create an image of a street view or hillside as you explore new places. Instruction will take place in the AGO and in the neighbourhood for direct observation.

Comics: Narratives
Friday , July 8 – July 29, 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM (4 weeks)
Members $200 | Public $265
Inspired by comic genres ranging from surreal psychedelic to autobiographic Graphic Medicine, students will explore storytelling in comics. There will be in-class exercises and group critiques of an ongoing project, to be completed by the course end.
