Being better with money and more health-conscious are goals I think we all have for ourselves. It’s nice to feel like you’re not living hand to mouth, and it’s also nice to feel like you’ve got built arms above those hands and a six pack a foot or so below that mouth. Below are some choices you can make in your daily life to get fitter and keep your bank account in good shape too!

1. Riding your bike
Better for you, the environment, and your wallet. There’s literally no downside! Make sure to wear a helmet and keep your wits about you, but biking is like, 100% profit. What other activities save you money and tighten your thighs at the same time, I ask you.

2. Alternating water with booze
Not only will this keep you from entering the “WELL LET ME TELL YOU” phase of summer drinking, it will also keep you better hydrated, warding off hangovers for tomorrow, and plumping up your skin for today. Staying hydrated by drinking 8 glasses or so of water a day is a crucial part of any health regimen, plus you’ll be saving money by halving your bar tab.

3. Meal prep!
The key to healthy eating is good prep. Planning ahead can save you time and money and ensure you’re snacking on fruits and veggies instead of whatever’s at the corner store or cafe (usually a croissant in some kind of plastic wrap). Buy a ton of healthy groceries from your local cheap grocer in advance, then slice up your veggies and save them in tupperware. When you need a snack, dip some veg in hummus, throw them all in a pot for a stir fry with some chicken, or steam ’em up as a side dish for salmon. Grab an apple or orange with you on the go so you’re not stuck spending $7 on a mayo-heavy sandwich at Starbucks.

4. Planning outdoor activities
The summer is the time for FREE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES, people. Not only are these more likely to be active pastimes like sports or a gentle walk, but being out in the sun (with adequate sun protection) helps you absorb super-crucial Vitamin D. Check out a farmer’s market, movie screening, go for a swim, or head to a park—it’s all fun, it’s all good for ya, and it’s all freeee!

5. Selling your clothes/buying secondhand
Okay, so this one is good for you in a more karmic way, but good karma ain’t nothin’ to sniff at. Plus, buying secondhand clothes and recycling clothes you no longer want is an environmentally friendly way to keep your wardrobe fresh, while making/saving some money in the process. Take your clothes to a Kind Exchange or Common Sort to sell, and shop there or at Goodwill, Value Village, Salvation Army, or some of the city’s many well-stocked vintage boutiques.

6. Quitting smoking
Oh my god, just quit smoking already. You know it, I know it, smoking is expensive and terrible for you. Patio season might be a hard time to do it but there is NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT and goodness gracious think of all the sundresses you could buy if you stopped buying cigs. Plus your teeth and your lungs and the smell… you know this. Bye bye.

Have a healthy, happy, budget-friendly summer, amigos!
