Danica Salajko has been making swimwear since she was 14 years old. Her mother had a custom swimwear shop, which is where she learned how. Fast forward 20 years, and the Toronto entrepreneur has her own swimwear line: Bathing Belle. Salajko makes every bathing suit by hand—every single one!—so you know the quality and care is there. One of her suits was even featured in Playboy, oh boy!

“I believe shoppers today like to know where their clothing is being manufactured,” she says. “With my company, you know the product is hand-made in Canada, by the designer! And with 20 years experience, I think I can say I’ve had a lot of practice.”

Salajko, who also has an Etsy shop to sell her work, understands that every woman’s body is unique—which is why her method of making each piece by hand works so effectively.

“Growing up working in custom swimwear store, I learned every woman is different, especially the space between her neck and her hips,” she says. “I wanted to offer women a place where they could shop for a swimsuit, and not feel limited to sizing—and find something that fits properly.”

While she hopes to hire help as her company grows, Salajko is currently operating a one-woman business. She does everything herself, from the designing and sewing to the marketing and shipping. Intense? You bet! A lot of work? No doubt. And while having her company expand would be amazing, for her, seeing women feel confident in her designs is the real triumph.

“The way I define success for myself is when I can make something for someone who thought they could never wear a swimsuit again due to a health issue (like a mastectomy, colostomy, scarring, burns, etc),” says Salajko. “My goal has always been to make you look and feel great, comfortable, and confident—while wearing very little!”
