One of our favourite comedy troupes in the city, the ladies of She Said What? never fail to reduce us to a state of bellyaching laughter. Marni Van Dyk, Megan MacKeigan and Emma Hunter are back for the Toronto Fringe Festival, with a show rated 4 Ns by NOW. She Said What Happened? brings the good times to the Bathurst St. Theatre, and if you’ve never seen their show before (WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING?) this is a good time to catch up. Will they get mad if we say they’re as funny as Bridesmaids? Whatever, they’re as funny as Bridesmaids. We talked to the girls about why a Llama would never survive the Hunger Games, Gary Coleman, and why real girls don’t cry onstage, they pee.

Please compare every member of She Said What to a wild animal, and justify your choice. Now, imagine you’re pitted against each other in a Hunger Games-style fragile ecosystem. Who’s coming out the winner?
Emma is like one of those fancy birds from the rain forest that dances to attract mates.
Marni is like a hedgehog. Sharp but cute.
Mack is like a llama. Slow, steady, reliable, and soft.
Obviously the llama will be the only one not to survive – the hedgehog will burrow away into another place where there is food and the bird will dance so well that other animals will just give their food to her.

What is the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to each of you on stage?
Mack peed a little bit in her pants on stage once. It’s embarrassing for all of us.

Who would you love to see sitting front row at a She Said What show?
Big Bird. Although it might obstruct the view from the second row.

What is your ideal walk-on anthem?
The one we’re using for our current show. Obviously. Or Raucous cheers from our adoring fans. Or the Oprah theme. Or The Canadian National Anthem. We’re traditionalists. We usually don’t have a walk-on anthem. We always open the show ourselves with a Spice Girls cover. We choose a different one every time!

What is the hardest thing about being a young female comedian in Toronto? The best?
Well, sometimes people expect the show to be focused on particular monthly cyclical topics or for us to cry if something doesn’t go as planned.

The best thing is proving that wrong, wearing mustaches and doing a show with your very funny best friends.

What social quirks do comedians have that us normal folk just don’t?
Comedians often dress poorly. We try to avoid that.

Who are some of your favourite female comedians?
Tina Fey, Kristen Wiig, our moms.

If you could have a guest role in any show on TV, what show would you pick, and what would your character be?
Mack: Star Trek TNG. She would be Q’s love interest with greater powers. He’s such a babe.
Emma: M*A*S*H*. She would play a burn victim that keeps everyone in the whole camp laughing.
Marni: Different Strokes. She’d play Gary Coleman.

Tell us about what we can expect at She Said What Happened?
She Said What Happened is a revue of some of our favourite sketches, polished up and put together into a masterpiece of misadventure. The show is about the coming of age of a young boy who can see ghosts and befriends a middle-aged Willis. But seriously, we’ve got a cascade of characters, high energy song and dance, as well as a glimpse at the behind-the-scenes drama of the women of She Said What. It’s guaranteed fun!
