1.What does a typical Thursday look like for you, starting from when you wake up – to heading to bed?
Generally on a Thursday I wake up, have a quick breakfast then head over to my laptop to start answering emails from either my TS crew or from viewers who email me asking for advice. Around 11, I will take a break to watch The View (I know it’s cheesy but I just love that show!) then from about noon until 4 I am back on my computer answering more emails, moderating the comment threads on the site or I write new show topics/questions and schedule any upcoming shoots. Around 4-5 I’ll call it quits for the day, however, I tend to always keep checking email sporadically through the night – I like to be on top of things as much as I can. Maybe it’s not an exciting routine but I look forward to it every day!
2. What was your first job out of school?
My first job out of school was actually the same job I had while I was in school – I have been bartending for the last 7 years. I love working in the entertainment industry (in Canada) but until you are established it’s difficult to make a living at it. So for the time being I have to suck it up and keep on cranking out the cocktails!
3. What are the 3 skills you require most to do your job well?
Well my job on TwentySomething isn’t just one job really. Since I created the show I am involved in every aspect of it. I not only host the show, I am the co-producer, creator, site moderator, promoter, and writer.
So the 3 main skills I need are:
– The ability to prioritize/organize task
– On-camera appeal (so people actually want to watch the show – it’s harder than you think)
– The most important skill I need is my inter-personal skills! Managing a team of 9, working to keep moral high and tasks on track while juggling conflicting schedules, is a constant challenge. In the end, as I watch the finished segments, I am reminded in 5 minutes why I spend those long hours working on TwentySomethingtv – because it works. My team and I gel like family and we are are producing a talk show we believe in and, most importantly, want to watch!
4.What do you love most about your career?
The one thing I think I love the most about my career is that I essentially created it myself. I took a concept that was my dream career and, with the help of my co-producer, Brett, and my cast/crew (Penney, Stacey, Sabrina, Sam, Katie and Marie) we made it happen.
We have started down a path, in the world of internet tv, that isn’t that well travelled – yet. I love knowing that we are blazing trails in the world of online tv that no one else has done and made a success of yet. It’s an exciting time!
5. Do you have any warnings?
Not really, but I do have advice for anyone looking to start their own online show.
Make sure you verse yourself with what is currently out there; double check that your content is original. The internet is saturated with everything anything you could ever want to find, watch, read or play. However, even if your content can’t be found anywhere else, understand that it is a slow process to gain an audience online. It will take longer than 3 months build an audience, but if you are passionate about it – stick it out.
If it was easy everyone would be doing it.
6.If you could try a different career on for a year, what would it be?
I would be a relationship counselor. Since the show began an unexpected development has arisen, positioning the girls and I as advice columnists. It means everything to me that viewers of TwentySomething trust us enough to ask us for mostly relationship advice. I love helping others – it’s validating to know that it is possible to build that close a relationship with our viewers.
