I’m not a gamer. *SURPRISE* The last time I played a video game was when my uncle bought me Super Mario Bros for Christmas in 1987. So when I was approached by Disney Interactive to test out Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved, 2 thoughts crossed my mind: 1) Yessssir, I D-A-N-C-E! 2) Wait, will I even know what to do? Sounds ridiculous, but that’s how clueless I am with video game technology. However, this game doesn’t even use controllers, just your hands. After a very thorough introduction by a friendly sorcerer, I got into it. Like, really into it. (See photos.)
Disney Interactive calls it “a breakthrough motion-controlled music rhythm game”, and a music rhythm game is exactly what it is. Taking players on a musical ride, every burst of energy is rewarded with Fantasia fireworks when you reach to the screen and POP! – hit that note. It’s pretty much the most fun and dramatic workout session ever experienced, full of thrilling, colourful, and seriously sassy moves.
Beyond the impressive visuals, the music is fun and spans all genres and eras. I liked waving my hands frantically to Bohemian Rhapsody and the recent hits by Avicii and Fun. Olga preferred the soft melodies of the classical Fantasia music. What we also realized is that while each song has its original version, each song has at least two mixes that can be unlocked, so between the mixing and mashing of different instruments and beats, you could never hear the same song twice. Basically, this game can be however you make it – FIERCE or swan-like; sweat, float, punch, sweep, sashay, bend, arch, POW! Get it? Those Ferrero Rochers will burn off in minutes.
From your six-year-old niece to Grandma, Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved is entertainment that will be enjoyed by everyone in the family. Perfect for enduring those long spans of time with distant relatives, but also fun for just you and your cat. Sweat off Christmas treats and show Uncle Larry who’s boss.
