I had just broken my treasured pair of octagonal Dior frames from the 70’s. I’d taken them to three of the best repair shops in the city (according to her highness, Google), one of which ended up being in a pseudo-private residence. Clearly, there was nothing further to be done. Hope was lost; Rocket Woman was dead.

And then I heard about Happy Lenses. Good timing! I could use some cheering up after this whacky ordeal which ended with me LITERALLY running away from some creep’s makeshift office (living room). I booked myself a consultation at Iris immediately, and it went a little something like this:

Iris professional: “Do you have glasses?”

Olga: “Yes, I’m far sighted and have astigmatism”

Iris professional: “Why aren’t you wearing them?”

Olga: “I lost them months ago….but it’s okay cuz I never wore them anyway.”

Dead air.

The truth is, I REAAALLLLY should wear glasses but my last pair almost got me hit by a car. With each step I felt like I was sinking in wet sand or potholes. No matter how hard I tried to get used to them, it just didn’t work. So, I intentionally lost them.

Back to my Iris consulation! It was time for some eye exams prior to seeing the optometrist. The tests were unusually fun. Like, you know when you get caught up in a game on your iPhone on the subway and when you reach your stop you’re kind of bummed because you were in a bit of a groove. Like that. One game even had a clicker, which you were supposed to squeeze when ripples appeared.

Then it was time to see the Big Kahuna. She took a long time with me, longer than anybody else has in the past to really understand my needs. She ran even more tests and explained the results thoroughly. Turns out my eyes looked healthy, no signs of glaucoma, but there was a bit of sun damage (from years of wearing sunglasses from the 70’s..DUH). In case you’re wondering, this is what my eyeball looks like, enjoy.

2014-05-07 14.29.26She took her time ensuring that my new prescription was just right, and that I could move around freely. This included me prancing around her office wearing these babies. Needless to say, I looked FLY. And no potholes!

2014-05-07 14.41.59My experience at Iris left me feeling fuzzy and warm . Super knowledgeable and attentive – every member of the team was lovely. If there is such thing as having a wonderful eye exam, I’m certain this was it. I went to the Avenue Rd location, which I loved, but I’m sure they’re all wonderful.

Last step! It was now time to fill out the order for my new sunnies, the SPY Happy Lenses! They’re super advanced. They use a special technological feature that lets in good rays and blocks out harmful ones. The long, blue light rays promote balance in the body and contribute to elevated mood!

I’ve been wearing them all summer and can attest to the happy factor, the last few months have been fantastic! Trips to the beach, BBQs, park dates with delicious ice cream sandwiches…and this girl even managed to get married!

I really enjoy wearing them, and I’ve become more cognizant of making sure that I have them on me every time I leave the house. I’m usually pretty forgetful so that leads me think that they are indeed sending good vibes to my brain which triggers the response.

I can’t say definitively that there’s a correlation between my walk down the aisle and my Happy Lenses, but the timing of the proposal and the day on which I wore my Happy’s for the first time is very suspicious….
