I’ve got a bit of a confession…I’ve had a cold on and off for 2 weeks. So what’s a nutritionist to do?  I have zero desire to take any over-the-counter medication, or get antibiotics (also, I’m not on the floor dying, it’s just a head cold that won’t go away).

Here’s what I’m drinking to help get rid of the cold once and for all!  It’s a homemade flu fighter that uses natural remedies to kick the flu in the butt!

Ginger:

Ginger has been used in India & Ayurvedic medicine for centuries.  Ginger is said to inhibit mucous production, which can clear up congestion.  Ginger is also warming, which helps increase circulation, and therefore helps your body rid itself of toxins.

Raw Honey:

It’s important to note here that the honey should be raw for the health benefits.  Like many foods, once they’re heated above a certain temperature, the enzymes are denatured, and much of the nutritional benefits of the food are lost.  Raw honey has anti-microbial properties.

Lemon:

Lemons are a great source of Vitamin C, a key antioxidant for the immune system.

Prep time:
Total time:
Ingredients
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1 inch nob of ginger, peeled and sliced
  • ½ lemon, sliced
  • 1 tsp raw honey
Instructions
  1. Boil water
  2. Add ginger and lemon to water and steep for 10 minutes
  3. Strain liquid and add honey
One other flu fighting tip:

I’ve also been cutting up a clove of raw garlic and topping it on my lunch and/or dinners.
