We caught up with Jacquie from The Balconies at the Hollerado Nacho House on a sunny rooftop on Spadina. Amidst conscientious application of SPF 70 and cheers of NXNE excitement, she took the time to talk to us about how to make the most of your festival weekend (or at least survive un-crispy). Catch the Balconies playing in Trinity Bellwoods Friday afternoon, re-imagining their set with classical instruments.
What are some of your favourite North by Northeast memories from last year?
We had just recorded a bunch of new songs, and I distinctly remember Steve and I practising harmonizing in the van. It was a really good time, kind of a blur. We were just happy to be a part of it, it was awesome and exciting.
Who are you going to see this year?
Golden Dogs, Rich Aucoin, Dinosaur Bones, and tomorrow we’re playing the Trinity Bellwoods Picnic. We’re doing our set with classical instruments. I’ll be on viola.
What advice would you give to NXNE first timers?
Don’t drink too much on the first night. Sleep as much as you can. Eat well. If you’re outside, apply sunscreen! Have a good time, and keep your group small. For bands, practice hard, and don’t be afraid to network. We’re all friends here, trying to build a community.
If you could play with anyone at the festival, who would it be?
I’m playing with everyone I really want to play with!
What’s in your NXNE First Aid Kit?
Sunscreen, water, granola bars, earplugs, guitar picks, camera, band aids. Last year people stepped on my feet and they got all cut up. And a smile.
