Franky Rousseau Big Band + Paperplanes @ Sala Rossa
Franky Rousseau’s twenty-piece big band (with a 15-person horn section!) premieres at Sala, joined by Paperplanes and DJs Max Max & Rocksberry. They’ll be playing all original music, blended with pre-recorded material and live visuals from Cedric Laurenty and Roxane Loumède.

Covet Sample Sale @ Boutique Fly
Get ready to throw a few elbows, as Fly will have ONE set of Covet fall 2010 samples. Fall coats, regular price $280 for $110, fall 2010 fashion for 60% off…and tons of timeless samples from all seasons from $20 to $60. De-stress Montreal @ Concordia University
Chances are you could use a breather after duking it out at the Covet sample sale. Learn relaxation techniques at De-Stress Montreal, a community service outreach initiative by the Art of Living Foundation. The workshop offers an opportunity to: learn breathing techniques to eliminate stress, experience a guided mediation, and learn techniques to deal with stress in everyday life.

The Dunwich Horror @ Blue Sunshine
Blue Sunshine, Montreal’s finest new theatre  (or Psychotronic Film Centre, if you will) will screen the 1970 horror cult classic Dunwich Horror. Based on a short story by HP Lovecraft, the screening will have a particularly festive air, as it coincides with Lovecraft’s birthday.

SATURDAY 

How to Write @ Galerie Monastiraki
The Montreal launch of Calgary author Derek Beaulieu’s new book, How to Write (Talonbooks 2010), featuring a reading by the author. He’ll be joined by Montreal writer Jacob Wren.

Best of Open Mic @ Comedy Works
You never know what sort of brilliant jokes (or cringe-worthy groaners) will come out the mouths of open mic participants. Most of the dross has been weeded out for this event, as six of August’s best open micers duke it out for a weekend spot!
