Montreal Just for Laughs Festival

The Montreal Just for Laughs Fest kicks off a month of zany fun. The opening week’s French-only programming includes the comic stylings of Stephane Rousseau and Jean-Marc Parent; English performances begin July 11. Featured comics include Kevin Smith, Louis CK, Russell Peters, Jeremy Hotz, Caroline Rhea, Craig Ferguson, John Oliver, Weird Al Yankovic and many more. Visit the JFL Box Office for ticket info.

TUESDAY JULY 5

7pm Greasy Goose Salon – Scrap @ Le Cagibi, 5490 St-Laurent. The Greasy Goose Salon is an informal community lecture series, providing a forum for people to present their work or ideas in a friendly, community-minded atmosphere. Each event is based around a broad theme and features speakers approaching the topic from various perspectives: artist talks, academic-style presentations, political lectures, literature readings, public speaking, short workshops, etc. This week’s theme is “scrap” and features lectures by Kerri Flannigan, Paul Hébert, Pandora Hobby, Jennifer Soup and Anthony Kinik.

8:30pm Riot Grrrl for Rock Camp @ Il Motore, 179 Jean Talon O. Come see your favourite Riot Grrrl songs covered by seasoned and brand-new musicians alike! 5 newly formed bands – X-Ray Sex, Fuck Kitty, I Wanna be Your Sleater-Kinney, The Impermeables and Jigsaw Youth – play a Riot Grrl cover show to benefit Rock Camp for Girls Montreal. DJ Krza, DJ Shosho and DJ Anna Lev will be spinning the best girl rock hits. $5-$15 cover + donations welcome.

THURSDAY JULY 7

8pm Maisonneuve Summer Launch: Comedy Night @ Montreal Improv, 3713 St Laurent #202. A night of improv, stand-up and comic readings to celebrate Maisonneuve‘s Summer 2011 issue. Featuring improv sets by Meteor, Sean Michaels, Marc Rowland and BJ Walsh; stand-up by Duncan Links; and a reading by Maisonneuve contributor Chandler Levack. $8 admission includes a copy of Maisonneuve’s Summer 2011 issue.  

FRIDAY JULY 8

8:30pm Don 70s Bollywood Gangster Classic Screening @ Blue Sunshine, 3660 St Laurent, 3rd floor. The original Don (not to be mistaken with the 2006 remake) is one of the all-time classics of 1970s Bollywood. Equal parts kitsch and action, Don features spontaneous song and dance numbers to a funky Bollywood soundtrack, and stars the Indian superstar Amitabh Bachchan in his prime. 175 min. Hindi w/ English Subtitles. 

8:30pm Urge Overkill @ Il Motore, 179 Jean Talon O. You bought the Pulp Fiction soundtrack for their cover of “Girl You’ll be a Woman Soon,” now see ‘em live at Il Motore. They’re playing in support of their new record“Rock & Roll Submarine,” their first album since 1995. $15. 

9pm Jolie Holland @ Cabaret du Mile-End, 5240 Avenue du Parc. The Tom Waits-approved Jolie Holland plays Cabaret du Mile-End in support of her new record, “Pint of Blood.” Tickets $17.

SATURDAY JUNE 9

8:30pm Gang Gang Dance + Nguzunguzu and Total Freedom @ Il Motore, 179 Jean Talon O. NYC experimental synth group Gang Gang Dance plays Il Motore in support of their new album, “Eye Contact.” They’ll be joined by LA improvisational music duo Nguzunguzu and Total Freedom. Tickets $15.

10pm Mark Slutsky and CFCF’s Summer Slamsation @ Casa del Popolo, 4873 St-Laurent. A summer dance party the likes of which has not been seen since the previous summer! Featuring CFCF and Mark Slutsky.
