Bonde Do Role & The Death Set @ The Social

There is nothing elegant, refined nor graceful when it comes to Bonde Do Role. Nonetheless from the second I locked eyes on M.C. Marina I knew we had something special. Initially I imagined our mutual specialness be attributed to a common worship of the gold Lamé Onezee she ornamented. This only naturally encouraged a greater appreciation towards her seemingly riled attitude as she blasted out infectious, frenzied and ultimately obscene lyrics so enthusiastically I questioned her sanity.
While I naively questioned her judgment, it was only after a convo with the gal that I was able to detect some eerily Gingy-esque resemblance. I swiftly learned that this wild-eyed seemingly nuts-o was actually an extremely ‘down to earth’ (for whatever that’s worth), articulate, educated and worldly lil’ fucker that opted to discuss Latin politics, learn English and share her vast knowledge gained through working in Brazil at the University library in her former years; considerably more than indulging in the vice ridden antics that she was so successfully providing the soundtrack for.
Well sadly these are days gone by. M.C. Marina is no longer yet Bonde Do Role still remains (two M.C.’s have since replaced the one and only by way of an MTV Brazil broadcast search). All I have remaining are my memories and a few sweaty-banged pics of our special moments over the years. Although Marina won’t be the main attraction and I’m all too much of an emotional wreck to muster the will to listen to any post-Marina Bond Do, its been my experience that Baile funk/Funk Carioca never disappoints, and indisputably makes one want to bounce around the room dementedly.
For individuals yet to jump on the Baile Funk bandwagon, Vice once wrote these parties are “basically murderous indoor games of Capture the Flag set to beats and piles of cocaine”.
This musical tour de force began in the Favelas of Brazil (don’t worry if you need to Google, I will await your return) internalizing unrefined Miami beats, grimy electro, looped over raw drum rhythms and interspersed with a merciless M.C. or two. In the case of Bonde Do Role this is an incoherent and absolutely irrational bombardment of Portuguese lingua franca ultimately generating immediate, incessant yet insignificant enchantment.
Pedro and Gorky (and the two MTV Brazil winners) will be conducting Bonde Do Role V2.0 on Sunday May 18th (don’t fret Monday is a holiday) at The Social. Opening for them will be electro screamers The Death Set.
