An imperfect life guide for women

Tryst, Toronto's Expert Bra Fitting Boutique, Whispers to my Boobs: "You're Wearing The Wrong Size"

One of the reasons why I hadn’t gotten a proper bra fitting all my life – despite watching Oprah’s inspiring Bra Interventions and all – was this image in my head of what it would be like: fluorescent lights and a stranger’s hands touching my naked skin. Oh, silly me though – the reality when I walked into Tryst Boutique on a Thursday afternoon propelled me out of the inaccurate stone age and into the comfort of the present reality of bra fittings.

Friendly, frank, open and bubbly expert Shana is owner of Tryst. She’s been a bra fitter for 13 years, trains other bra fitters-to-be from all over Canada, and is a damn good boob whisperer. Her gravitation towards this career path started in high school when she couldn’t find the right bra for her larger-than-average knockers. Now she’s proud to offer the lucky women of Toronto expert fittings. Well-endowed ladies can experience the freedom of a strapless bra, and Tryst has lingerie for women of all sizes: cup sizes AA-K, and back sizes 28-52. Tryst offers free strap alterations at no charge if you bring a bra back (bought at full price) within two years.

Tryst would like to present something special for She Does The City readers only: mention the phrase “City My Bra” at either location for the next 30 days (starting MARCH 17th 2011) and receive 10% off anything in the store!

In between telling me about a recent trip to Cuba that became a bra-giveaway extravaganza, Shana whisked me into a change room and measured over my clothes, to give us a starting point. And this is exactly how a bra fitting would start for you as well – no appointment necessary and a casual atmosphere at their two locations (465 Eglinton West at Avenue Road or 559 Queen W at Bathurst).

Throughout the process of trying on different bras and examining the evidence at all angles in mirrors, we discovered my perfect bra size and perfect bra – and at first I gasped at the letter. Shana quickly soothed my shock by explaining how little of a gap there is in between sizes, and how more women are a D or higher than you would think. My size? Sorry, not telling!

There are many questions to ask yourself when you’re wondering if a new bra is perfect. Is it comfortable when I’m standing? What about when I’m squatting and bending over? Does it make me feel good? How does it look when I put my shirt on, do I like the shape it makes my breasts? Is there any side-boob? Too much cleavage? Not enough? Shana has found over the years that most women are wearing a cup too small and a back too big, so notice at the end of the day if there are any red markings and where. This information will prove helpful when getting a fitting.

I ended up choosing a gorgeous beige number, with a white sparkling rhinestone in the middle and delicate patterned lace: the perfect fit and ultimate comfort. In fact, I’m wearing it at this very moment and when I catch myself in the mirror, my tits look like they did when I was 16. Hallelujah! I’ve been a big-time bra offender in the past, buying bargain bras and wearing them until they are flimsy and as unsupportive as an old ex. Tryst will show you the difference, and show you what you’re missing. Even if you can only afford one or two investment bras for now, it will make you love your boobs in a whole new way, and feel extra-sexy on special occasions when you decide it’s time to take you and your breasts out to dinner.
