Venturing into the YACHT show at Wrongbar in Toronto, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I most definitely didn’t plan on leaving as sweaty as I did, but an evening of atmospheric beats, flashing lights and non-stop dancing will do that to you.

Unlike the name suggests, YACHT has nothing do with boats and is in fact the electro-pop project of former member of the Blow, Jona Bechtolt. While his previous albums were largely solo endeavors, Bechtolt joined forces with Claire L. Evans for the recent album See Mystery Lights. It was easy to see that the duo – which becomes a four-piece for concerts – has plenty of chemistry on stage, feeding off the over-zealous Wrongbar crowd.

Bechtolt was very impressive with his dance moves and audience interaction, making it difficult for anyone to stop grooving. “Psychic City” and “Ring the Bell” were definite crowd favourites, though each song seemed to flow perfectly into the next, leaving little time to catch your breath.

Audience members jumped on stage during “Waste of Time,” reciprocated by Bechtolt joining the crowd before “Summer Song” for a guided meditation. We were instructed to get down on one knee and do some chants and prayers before the music came back on. I don’t remember what we were chanting about or praying for, but I do remember thinking that I wished all religious ceremonies were like this.
