You shouldn’t need an excuse to treat your mom, but if you’ve been slacking lately Mother’s Day is the perfect time to reassert your appreciation. Here are a couple things you can do for mom to make the day as special as possible. Just remember that the best thing you can give your mom for Mother’s Day is a little bit of time. It sounds cheesy, but it works every time.

Main Street has some wicked antique shops, complete with elaborate Italian pieces and classical music. Start on 25th (maybe stop by Dream Sushi for lunch?) and walk south. Many are on the east side of the street, so start there and zig zag as you feel fit. There are also a number of cheaper consignment stores with equally impressive pieces for those on a budget.

There’s nothing more classically mother-daughter than an afternoon tea. Head down to Kerrisdale for some mother-daughter bonding at the Secret Garden Tea Company. Sweets, scones, tiny sandwiches, and some of the best tea you’ll ever have will have you lingering well into the afternoon. Definitely make reservations ahead of time; this place tends to get busy.

Treat mom (and yourself!) to a relaxing facial at Skoah. There are a wide range of facials available, so you can stop by in the middle of your day or make it the main event. This is another activity you’ll have to plan ahead of time, but it’s well worth it for the glow you’ll feel after. I’m a big fan of the Fitskin Facial, which includes two masks and an arm/neck massage.

If your mom loves theatre, then you can’t miss the Arts Club’s production of Hairspray. A super fun musical featuring a strong mother-daughter relationship, Hairspray is a perfect way to spend the evening with your mom. Stop by Ouisi Bistro for a memorable Creole/Cajun meal before the performance.
