Set in the English countryside and based on a graphic novel, Tamara Drewe is an anglophile’s dream come true. Taking place at a beautiful writer’s retreat in a tiny, tiny town, the peace is interrupted by the return of Tamara (Gemma Arterton), a posh girl who has gone to London, gotten a nosejob, and become a successful journalist. Back to fix up her recently deceased mother’s house, the story involves the megalomaniac mystery writer she had a childhood crush on (Roger Allam), his wronged, stalwart wife (Tamsin Greig), the British pop star (Dominic Cooper) who’s recently asked for Tamara’s hand in marriage, two teenage girls who are obsessed with him, a charming and bumbling intellectual, and the seriously sexy farmer (Luke Evans) with whom Tamara used to have scintillating sex in the garden shed. As Tamara’s personal demons send her hurtling through town and mucking life up for everybody, affairs are revealed, crimes are committed, confusion ensues, and love develops. This movie is an all-rounder, with enough mystery, sex, charm, and comedy to please everyone, and a perfectly paced story and endearing characters to boot.
