Bibi Bourelly is a 21-year-old Berlin-born artist that has already written for Rihanna, Selena Gomez and Usher. She was recently signed to Def Jam and just released her brand new track, Sally.

We caught up with Bibi this week.

SDTC: What are your favourite places to hang out in Toronto?

BB: Kensington Market! I want to get a house there and like sleep on the street and drink lots of liquor. Love it.

What aisle do you spend the most time in at the grocery store?

Anything with carbs and pasta, but I don’t actually buy anything. I just look at it for a long time and imagine myself eating Doritos.

Which virtue do you try to cultivate within yourself?

I’m very determined.

The receipts in your wallet would indicate what?

People would be like, “Why do you buy an American Spirit pack every two days if you don’t smoke cigarettes?” And I’ll tell you why. I get drunk as fuck and I buy an American Spirit pack because I want one cigarette. And then I’ll give away the pack to my homie because I don’t want to get addicted. So I just give away my packs of cigarettes and three days later I’ll buy a whole new fucking pack of cigarettes and just keep giving them away for one cigarette.

What did you think you were going to be when you were 8 years old?

A singer so I could make music for a living.

If you could live anywhere else in the world, where would it be?

That’s a hard question because I love the world. I have lived in Berlin and LA. I guess Morocco.

What makes you happy?

Seeing people inspired makes me happy.

What makes you cringe?

Intolerance.

What, in your opinion, is overrated?

Waist Trainers – they are weird as fuck.

What is the one thing you wish you could change about yourself?

I’m very hard on myself. I wish I could just chill like, “Relax it’s cool, your life is fine.”

What word is overused?”

“Swag” – I fucking hate that word. “Energy” – even though I use that shit all the time. I hate that shit. I use that shit all the time and it’s like what the fuck does that mean? I can feel your energy?

What word or phrase should we use more often?

“I don’t care” should be used more often. Or “Fuck it.”

Art is ______?

Life.

What is the best thing you did this week?

I met a really cool producer.

What is the funniest thing you’ve ever witnessed?

The thing is I’m usually the subject of laughter so it’s hard for me to talk about the funniest shit I’ve ever witnessed. We were at a label meeting in Berlin, and we were so tired – we were in Copenhagen one day, flew to Paris for like an hour for a meeting, and flew to Berlin that same day. We were in this label meeting in Berlin with hella suits but they were mad cool suits. Anyway, this guy Tim is at the meeting talking and drinking his tea. And there’s this glass door, right? He went to go use the bathroom or some shit, and it’s a glass door that goes into the little room for the label meeting. I am watching this man walk towards the door, and I’m like, “Oh, he’s about to open the door.” No, he just walks into the door. And I’m like, “This just happened in a label meeting, that’s funny as fuck.” I actually didn’t say that. I laughed really obnoxiously and loudly and was screaming and was like, “You suck,” and that he rocked. But that shit was so funny.
