At the Artists for Peace and Justice fundraiser at Toro After Dark, director Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby, Casino Royale) shut the bar, shushed the crowd and reminded us of the important things in life. Most TIFF parties are about wrestling for free vodka, freaking out about onion breath, swapping biz cards with people you will never call and bragging about which hollywood A-lister didn’t see you in the loo. However, the Artists for Peace and Justice event is one with a very clear purpose: raise money for children in Haiti. Out to support in the pouring rain were James Franco (who is hot-hot-sexy-hot in person), Maria Bello, Josh Brolin, K’Naan and Martin Sheen. Haggis conducted a live auction where he encouraged the well-off attendees to bid the big bucks. A pass for two to attend the premiere and after party of the “most anticipated films of the year!” (Or Haggis’s upcoming The Next Three Days) started with a $10, 000 price tag. Haggis worked the mic, “Party with Russell Crowe… he might even be nice to you!” For a table at The Hollywood Awards Gala, he upped the ante shouting, “Charlize Theron will give you a lap dance!” It seems that getting naked and raising money go hand in hand as beyond dreams of Theron boobies, 90210’s Anna Lynne McCord spontaneously decreed that she would rip off her dress for $500 and Martin Sheen did a peep show on the red carpet, revealing his knickers for a grand. In a few short hours, nearly $100, 000 was raised, and although there is no guarantee that Crowe won’t be a jerk, there is a promise that all the funds raised go directly to the cause.
