How old were you when you developed your first roll of film? What were the results?
I was 12 and it was in the dark room at camp. Some of those photos are still some of my favourites, though I think I’ve become slightly more adventurous since then. Barely.
If you could photograph anyone in history, who would it be?
Gene Kelly. I feel like he’d be up for anything and he’d do it with a smile on his face and tap shoes on his feet. Him or David Bowie. Mr. Bowie if you’re reading this, please call me.
How did that epic photoshoot with Shenae Grimes come to be? How did it feel being on camera while behind a camera?
Basically I sent her a message asking if she wanted to do a shoot for fun before she moved to LA to do 90210. We had known each other a long time but had never worked together. Word began to spread about the shoot and before we knew it we had all sorts of media there. I don’t mind being filmed while I’m shooting as long as they don’t catch me falling over, which is not an uncommon occurrence.
What do you love about fashion photography?
I love how creative you can be with the shoot. You can basically take any idea and turn it into something spectacular, provided you have a good crew. When you have talented people working with you it becomes effortless.
Are you stoked not to be shooting Bar Mitzvah’s anymore?
Definitely stoked but I do miss some things about Bar Mitzvahs. Okay, I do miss the chocolate fountains. You can dip anything in those.
It’s like magic.
What’s the hardest thing about what you do?
Carrying my equipment from shoot to shoot. I’m pretty much a bag lady at all times.
Are you doing anything for fashion week?
Sadly I’m working for most of it so I’ll miss a lot of great shows, but I’m really looking forward to Hot Lights and Jessica Biffi’s show! It is going to be spectacular!
Most awkward photoshoot moment?
I could never pick just one. I really fall a lot.
If you were to have a fashion photoshoot with yourself as the model, how would you want your hair and make up? What would the location be?
Three words. Alice. In. Wonderland.
Do your dad’s films inspire your photography at all?
Nope! Well maybe.
When you’re not taking photos, what can you be found doing?
Baking cakes! maxandmickeys.blogspot.com.
