Even though Toronto is bustling with amazing events and parties every damn day of the week (need proof? See our weekly HIT LIST), there’s nothing I love more than a low-key evening spent at home. Give me snacks, good friends and a solid board game, and I’m pretty much set to have the time of my life. So you can understand my excitement when I received the NEW Pop Stream trivia game in the mail; I actually had to pinch myself since I dream of hosting game nights pretty regularly. Luckily, this was real.
As I soon discovered, Pop Stream is a super fun game that you can play with your squad or your partner – group size has no bearing on the gaming experience. It’s also easy to set up: all you have to do is download the app on your tablet and pick two teams – that’s it! The questions aren’t tricky or overly difficult; a healthy love of pop culture and sense of logic will get you to the finish line just fine.
Our favourite part of the game had to be the avatars. Every player gets one by snapping a selfie on the tablet (a.k.a. control board), which the game then displays in various interactive animations. We also enjoyed the buzzer feature and the added layer of strategy involved from each team having to place a wager on their answer.
Off the top, there are three rounds in Quick Pop, four rounds in Top Pop and five rounds in Mega Pop, so about fifty games in total or 1,000 questions! Once you’ve gone through them all, there are more to download.
Overall, we found some of the game elements unusual at first, but we quickly adapted. There were a lot of quirky steps we loved – from picking team names to creating avatars – and a fun evening was had by all. Interactive and expandable, I definitely see Pop Stream becoming a game night staple!
