This Movie Is Broken

By Monica Heisey
Bruno (Greg Calderone) has woken up beside Caroline (Georgina Reilly), and hopes this means his longtime unrequited crush will take a turn for the mutual, but Caroline is leaving for school in Paris the next day, and he’s promised her backstage passes. Directed by Bruce McDonald, This Movie is Broken blends fiction with reality to tell the story of longtime friends spending one last day together at the Broken Social Scene Harbourfront Concert of 2009 with Bruno’s friend Blake (Kerr Hewitt).
While the backstage pass issue is quickly resolved—as attendees of the show will recall, it was offered for free after the venue change from the Toronto island—the real problem, Bruno’s feelings for Caroline despite her assertions that their time together was ‘just sex’, is worked out throughout the course of the concert, as shots of the band rocking out mix with Bruno and Caroline kissing, fighting, and finally, separating. read more...

Say Anything Screening for FREE Tonight
Submitted by haley on Wed, 08/05/2009 - 08:24.
You Are About to Know Lloyd Dobler
Do like the She Does The City office: spend all day listening to 'In Your Eyes,' then head down to Harbourfront tonight for a free screening of seminal eighties movie Say Anything, starring John Cusack and a boombox. It's one of our favourite movies of all time, and there's no better place to see a romo movie then in an open-air theatre beside the lake. Have fun! Make out!
See how this summer's movies rated on our Say Anything Scale, and follow Harbourfront on Twitter to keep up with all their awesome (usually free) happenings: @HarbourfrontTO

If you’ve ever casually popped into the Harbourfront Centre while strolling the boardwalk or hanging water’s edge, you know how big and busy this cultural hub can be. With so many festivals, art exhibits, concerts and plays on offer, the sheer selection can be overwhelming. Whether it’s a passion for indigenous cultures or a long-repressed desire to break into hula dancing at your next luau, the Harbourfront Centre boasts a bundle of events that will keep you busy this summer without breaking your budget. If you’re feeling starved for the arts, check out these free picks for a cultural smorgasbord that will satisfy your senses.
EVENT: Universal Code
WHY IT'S COOL: The exhibit presents a slew of contemporary artists’ response to themes like globalization, surveillance in the information age, and cosmology. Katie Paterson created her piece by launching a Morse code version of Moonlight Sonata into space via moon bounce and welcoming it home with missing notes. A self-playing piano serenades visitors with a fragmented remix of the Beethoven classic.
CHECK IT OUT IF YOU LIKE: To trip out on theories of infinite space with fellow art geeks.
WHEN/WHERE: June 12-August 30, The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, 231 Queens Quay West
