Sure, painting always sounds like a great idea. A quick means to hide imperfections and make a tired space look shiny and new, buuuuut it’s NEVER as straightforward as it seems. What starts off as a fun home improvement project involving beers, pizza and eager-to-help pals, more often than not, ends up with me sobbing into a paint tray at 2am.

There’s always some sort of an issue, and it’s usually my fault. More often then not, inspiration strikes in the middle of the night, and I roll with it! My husband is a contractor so we always have buckets of paint and mistints lying around.

I promise myself to be careful and conscious of my surroundings. It doesn’t take long for that plan to derail… Don’t have painters tape around? No Problem! I’ll just be extra cautious around the edges. Nothing to lay down to avoid drips and splotches? Who cares! I’ll be sure to get all the excess paint off the roller before hitting the wall.

A couple of years ago, in the middle of what could otherwise have been a lovely fall evening, I decided that our TV unit was lame. I grabbed some paint canisters and went to town, Jackson Pollock styles. A couple hours later I was done and headed to bed, feeling proud and accomplished. Well, over the course of the night, one of my dogs managed to knock down a couple poorly sealed paint cans which ended up ALL over our hardwood floor as I hadn’t laid anything down. To add insult to injury, I couldn’t leave my house that day as I bent my front door key while opening the cans and could no longer lock my door. DISASTER.

It’s taken me a long time to learn to take my time and follow all the steps. It doesn’t matter how great my newly painted wall or piece of furniture may look if I have to spend the next day on hands and knees scrubbing paint off the floor and replacing carpet tiles.

So what’s the takeaway? If you’re like me, and get the urge to redecorate in the middle of the night – be it painting a wall, a door or piece of furniture – know thyself and prepare! Pick up a ben & ME kit from your local Benjamin Moore store today (it comes with a roller, brush, paint tray, tray liner, can opener, drop cloth, tape, music playlist, how-to guide). This way, you’ll be READY to go whenever inspiration strikes, and have everything you need to get the job done right!
