Dear Mother Earth,

Please take me to a magical land where they believe in elves, bake bread in hot bubbling lava, where night never falls, horses run wild and puffins play. To a far away place where drinking vodka at noon is not frowned on, being a spa baby is heralded and where I can see a whale, bathe in a hot spring, gorge myself on herring and dance with a glow stick – all in one day.

I will be your friend forever.

Magical

Is there anything more gorgeous? Really? Except if you saw a flock of wild ponies in the waterfall, and an elf.

Every man and woman loves Bjork.

BJORK!!!

Pretty much everyone in Iceland is hot like this chick

Just like midgets and dwarwes, gnomes and elves are NOT THE SAME THING!

This totally beats the Eaton Centre fountain that everyone goes gaga over

No, I’m not referring to Narnia, Smurfland, Never Never land or any other land that one dreams up while high – but ICELAND!

Last week, in honour of Iceland Air’s new direct flights from Toronto to Reykjavik – I drank blue cheese martinis and gobbled up herring in Room 222 at The Drake. Yes, a blue cheese martini doesn’t sound exactly yummy, but mixed with a slice of apple, olive and a splash of Reyka Vodka, this filthy martini was the perfect midday zinger.

Just to be clear, I’m not a random paid promoter for Iceland Air, although I wish I was, but regardless I will rave on and on about how excellent a travel opportunity I think this is.

TWO MYTHS TO DISPEL RIGHT NOW
Flying to Iceland is not like flying to the top of the Arctic, it takes only 5 hours – that’s about the same time as a road trip to Montreal.
Iceland is currently warmer than Toronto and typically Reykjavik doesn’t get as cold as New York City in the winter – terribly misleading and NOT FAIR!

TEN REASONS TO GO TO ICELAND:

1. Every October all attention in the country is devoted to the Airwaves Music Festival. Last year artists came from around the world, including our faves: Bloc Party, Bonde do Role, Chromeo and The Teenagers. This coming October will be the ten year anniversary, Oct 15 -19. Forget partying like a Rockstar, party like a Viking…now that’s hard core.

2. You can also hit up the Icelandic Elf School in Reykjavik. In Iceland there are elf consultants that will ensure that roads, highways and new buildings do not disrupt the land of elves. The Icelandic government will pay millions of extra dollars to ensure that roads do not disturb elf communities. If you go to the school in Reykjavik, you can learn about the 5 different types.

3. The Blue Lagoon is a natural spa formed of geothermal seawater in which living properties of algae, silica and minerals are healing and blissful for the skin. Plus there is a steam bath in a lava cave. Come on – as if you aren’t dying to go.

4. A special breed of horses exists in Iceland, there are about 75, 000 of them, many of whom are wild. They are often referred to as ponies because of their small size. PLEASE take me to Iceland now!

5. There are over 10,000 waterfalls, many are still forming as glaciers shift. They are very pretty 🙂

6. Bjork is possibly the coolest person on earth.

7. Icelanders love vodka and the men are hot.

8. They party all night, especially in winter when it’s nighttime always. On June 21st, you can see the sun set and rise within minutes. Also, liberal attitudes allow for naked erotic clubs in downtown Reykjavik.

9. You can go geyser gazing and look at bubbling hot lava. Wicked.

10. February 4 is ‘Bun Day’ where everyone, especially children and greedy tourists, beg for cream puffs.

This week the Drake Hotel will be celebrating Iceland through culinary delights, music, nightlife and visual art.
