It’s so damn easy to get distracted on the road, amiright? All it takes is the sound of an email landing in your mailbox and – BOOM – you’re on the anxiety train. Is it an urgent request from your boss or a notification about Alice + Olivia’s newest collection at Shopbop.com? While both are important (obvi), it’s these sorts of things that can lead to a driver taking her eyes off the road and getting into some serious trouble.

It’s easy enough to ignore a couple calls when you’re behind the wheel but then your mind begins to race. Are they both from the same person? Could there be an emergency or is your BFF calling to bitch (AGAIN) about Rosie’s departure from The View (AGAIN).

Not to mention the road situation. Slush-covered streets, other distracted drivers, cyclists, slow tiny dogs, large dogs off-leash,  jaywalkers…welcome to downtown Toronto!

The world we drive in is full of distractions. And while we can’t avoid them all, we can definitely maximize our chances of staying safe by being attentive.

Enter OneTap, brainchild of AppColony. A brilliant and FREE Android app (iOS version currently in development), it manages your calls, texts and alerts so you can drive free of distractions; it’s a total game changer.

Using a built in GPS, OneTap is automatically enabled when you’re driving in your vehicle. It works by blocking out all notifications while sending automatic responses to your peeps letting them know that you’re behind the wheel. Unlike other apps, OneTap lets you know if a message is urgent so you can pull over safely.

There’s more! To help you stay connected, OneTap provides a service that allows you to see if and where your loved ones are driving. (Not to worry, privacy settings within the app can be adjusted to your liking in case mum stresses about your driving on highways.)

Still not convinced? The numbers, sadly, speak for themselves:

  • According to the RCMP, the leading cause of fatal crashes in Canada over the past five years is distracted driving, contributing to 33% of these accidents (RCMP Traffic Services, 2014)
  • An Ontario Ministry of Transportation study (2009) found that taking your eyes off the road for two or more seconds DOUBLES your risk of being in a car collision
  • A driver using a cell phone is four times more likely to be in a car crash than a driver focused on the road (Ontario Ministry of Transportation, 2009)

On a lighter note, does anybody feel inclined to burst into song upon hearing the hash? #JustOneTap and we forget everything, oh oh, Mamma Mia…No? Just us. It’s fine, don’t worry about it.
