The modern graphic novel continues to evolve into one of the most powerful (and popular) mediums. Once the domain of “comic book nerds,” the graphic novel is now featured alongside weightier tomes in NY Times Bestseller lists.

This Saturday at Harbourfront (235 Queens Quay West), learn more about the complex work of combining words and images. At Five Artists, Five Ways, you’ll meet cartoonists Michael DeForge, Nick Drnaso, Jon McNaught, and Chris Oliveros as they discuss the art of the graphic novel, from inspiration to the story strip, with Seth.

While you’re there, check out the Five Ways exhibit that spotlights their diverse work, including work by Nina Bujevac. From fiction to memoir, from slice of life to the absurd, from tightly realistic to the expressionistic–each artist presents a unique approach to comics. The exhibit runs from September 24th to December 22nd, 2016 in the Harbourfront Centre’s Artport Gallery.
