Toronto Hit List: Cosmic Residents, The Breakfast Club Quote-Along, Hide & Seek, Expansions & more!

August 9th-13th SummerWorks Festival @ various locations. Canada’s largest curated performance festival of theatre, dance, music, live art, and interdisciplinary forms. This year’s festival features 52 unique projects as well as artist workshops, performance experiments, and nightly parties.

August 9th-16th Plant Life @ Black Cat Artspace, 2186 Dundas St. W. A photography exhibition and botanical retail experience, presented by PhotoEd Platform and LadyBug Florist. 11-7 pm daily.

August 11th-13th Habari Africa Festival @ Harbourfront Centre, 235 Queens Quay W. Now in its fourth year, Habari Africa Festival features local and international artists who bring the evolving traditions and vibrant diversity of African culture to Toronto.

WEDNESDAY

7 pm Music Bingo @ The Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St. W. A FREE weekly event combining the love of music with the traditional bingo format. Each player receives a Music Bingo card which consists of an assortment of songs. Instead of calling out numbers, they play the music! Singing along encouraged.

8 pm Drake Trivia @ The Drake Hotel, 1150 Queen St. W. Teams of four or less put their random knowledge to the test as hosts Megan Griffith-Greene and Jeromy Lloyd fire off questions ranging from sporting records and celebrity scandals to geographic discoveries and culinary lingo. $2 to participate and the winning table gets an $80 Drake gift card (plus bragging rights)! 9 pm Cosmic Residents @ Superpoint Pizza (back room), 184 Ossington Ave. Vibe to some cosmically resonant frequencies in the secret Ossington pizza garage. Resident DJs Hemingway and Strange Robotix + special guests Korea Town Acid and Tender Buttons will provide the wax foundation, consisting mainly of, but not limited to: prog jazz, gnarly funk, electric psych, and nautical disco.

10 pm Luv Potion @ The Fountain, 1261 Dundas St. W. Guest bartender Max Mohenu returns to Fountain serve you that Luv Potion. R&B, soul, and classics all night (Dark & Stormys usually goes best with slow jams, but they’ll also have $6 tall cans and other delicious drinks for you to choose from).

7 pm Play House @ Glad Day Bookshop, 499 Church St. An exhibition focused on private/public spaces of queer vulnerability, featuring collaborative work by Natalie King and Wil Brask. Until 10 pm.

10 pm Throwback Thursdays @ Prettyugly Bar, 1237 Queen St. W. A weekly party series where Good Kids dim the lights low and turn the bass up on some of your favourite jams to move your hips to spanning multiple musical genres and decades.

10 pm Get Lo @ Clinton’s, 693 Bloor St. W. Bangs & Blush bring you the ULTIMATE ’90s til now dance party, GET LO! They’ll be playing all the shit you wanna hear from the ’90s to today.

10 pm Evening Standard Gives You Forever @ Bambi’s, 1265 Dundas St. W. Int’l pro club deejays rise from the ashes to play music made for dancing all night wrong, once again.

Launch party for the latest issue of Brindo, which invites the reader to consider their own idea of ripening with the seasons through a showcase of visual, poetic, and sonic compliments. 8:30 pm The Breakfast Club Quote-Along @ Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, 506 Bloor St. W. Relive the angst, the rebellion, and the emotions of one of the most beloved high school movies of all time while saying your favourite lines along with these unforgettable characters.
