Toronto Hit List: Toronto Light Festival, Yes Yes Y’all, Love Design Party, Stranger Things Snow Ball & more!

January 15th-21st Toronto Design Offsite Festival @ various locations. TO DO is Canada’s largest cultural celebration of design, bringing over 100 free events, exhibitions, and window installations to Toronto during design week.

January 17th-21st Come Up To My Room @ The Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St. W. The Gladstone Hotel’s annual alternative design event returns for a 15th year. Framed within the backdrop of the historic 128-year-old Gladstone Hotel, CUTMR invites artists and designers to create site-specific, immersive installations that stimulate the imagination and encourage discussion and dialogue between contributors and visitors alike. $10 general admission/$5 student tickets available online and at the door.

January 19th-February 25th Ice Breakers @ Queens Quay from Habourfront Centre to Toronto Music Garden. Discover, explore, and engage as five interactive public art installations break through Queens Quay West this winter.

January 19th-March 4th Toronto Light Festival @ The Distillery District. Back for a second year, Toronto Light Festival transforms the Distillery District into a large open-air gallery filled with works from local and international light artists.

WEDNESDAY

7 pm Music Bingo @ The Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St. W. A FREE weekly event combining the love of music with the traditional bingo format. Each player receives a Music Bingo card which consists of an assortment of songs. Instead of calling out numbers, they play the music! Singing along encouraged.

8 pm Drake Trivia @ The Drake Hotel, 1150 Queen St. W. Teams of four or less put their random knowledge to the test as hosts Megan Griffith-Greene and Jeromy Lloyd fire off questions ranging from sporting records and celebrity scandals to geographic discoveries and culinary lingo. $2 to participate and the winning table gets an $80 Drake gift card (plus bragging rights)! 9 pm Magical Unicorn Fashion Show @ Super Wonder Gallery, 584 College St. An evening full of spectacle and splendor! 16 artists will create magically-enhanced unicorns to rock the runway and overdose you with sparkle. Rave Deco by Thadea Decora, Unicorn Oracle Readings by Alexia Cito, and sounds by Steintology and Davey Boom. Costumes encouraged. $15 in advance, $20 at the door.

10 pm Yes Yes Y’all @ Nest, 423 College St. Toronto’s baddest queer hip-hop/dancehall/sweat-your-face-off party! NYC’s Tha Yellow R Kel joins the YYY crew this month. $6 before 11:30 pm, $10 after.

Tropic of Funk is an attempt to reconnect the roots of disco to a more contemporary and experimental sound while being aware of disco and funk’s underground nature. 10 am “Listening to Art, Seeing Music” Opening @ Aga Khan Museum, 77 Wynford Dr. A multi-sensory experience that will take visitors on a journey of discovery to explore the essential interconnectedness of the performing arts, the spoken word, and the visual arts. This event is in conjunction with the Aga Khan Museum and RBC’s Welcome Weekend, which showcases exhibitions, pop-up performances, and other programming completely free.

1 pm Japanese Winter Festival @ William Doo Auditorium, New College, 45 Willcocks St. Experience Japanese culture at the annual Japanese Winter Festival! Enjoy Japanese foods, make your own karuta (Japanese traditional playing cards), fold origami, and watch naginata performances! Until 5 pm. $5.

7 pm PULP: Paper Art Party @ Super Wonder Gallery, 584 College St. Ever partied in a room full of paper? PULP is an evening combining reclaimed materials, installation art, live music, dancing, and charity. It’s a fundraiser designed to examine the current life cycle of paper materials (among others) and investigate alternative uses. $20 advance tickets available online, with proceeds going to Yonge Street Mission Evergreen Centre for Street Involved Youth.

8 pm DJ Skate Nights: Beam Me Up @ Harbourfront Centre (Natrel Rink), 235 Queen’s Quay W. DJs Cyclist and The Patchouli Brothers help you rediscover the sounds of the underground party scene – the night clubs, lofts, and warehouses where disco was reborn (and house music was born).
