So the question of the day is:
Where do you fit in? The Power Ball or the D-list Ball?
As a slap in the face to the Power Plant, and a cheeky statement regarding the reality of an artists budget, Gallery TPW is having it’s second annual D-list Ball as a $5 plan B to the $160 ticketed Power Ball. Fancy duds and debauchery at the Power Plant or comfy clothes and cheap booze at the Gladstone?

Oooh The ORIGINAL contemporary art party…is that inferring that TPW is the unoriginal? FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT

Be a smartass and bring some bagels to work. One up the chump who shows up with McD’s

Have you ever seen a ghost?

Uh huh heels with electric chords tangled – sexy much?

UH HUH HER – Could you be any hotter with your shaggy bangs and angry lips?

What a crazy threesome.

Oh how I wish to have a day in the life of Princess Buttercup

YOAV
I’m going to try and hit both – however, I’m slightly nervous about getting carried away with the “DEBAUCHERY” theme of Power Ball – I’m very talented in this department.
If you’d rather play Swiss and be neutral, another cool art happening will be the opening reception for AFTER @ The Whippersnapper Gallery
Film stills by Anthony Marci show the urban architecture of a city’s decline. After the huge layoffs of auto manufacturers, Detroit lost 1.2 million people and once welcoming neighbourhoods are now wastelands. Detroit is a seriously f*cked up place but apparently has a cool art scene; often the two go hand in hand.
587A College
Opening Reception May 22nd – 7-10PM, exhibit runs until May 31
FORTE: a craft exhibition
South down on Ossington (apparently the hippest strip in the world right now, even reported in the NY Times last weekend!) the Sheridan ’08 Crafts and Design students will be showcasing their talents at the Lennox Contemporary

FRIDAY
EAT IT WITH A HOLE IN THE MIDDLE, it’s INTERNATIONAL BAGEL DAY!! WOOT WOOT –
There are two major bagel wars that continue to duke it out
1. Who has the better bagel, Gryfe’s or What-A-Bagel?
2. Do Montrealers have better bagels than Torontonians?
Watch out – I’ve landed in scary fights over these topics!
Let tomorrow be a day of peace, honouring of thy neighbour and a full out lox and cream cheese mouth orgy.
Uh huh her – Mod Club
The lesbian duo that makes every lesbian wet themselves, every straight woman wishing they were gay, and simply helping straight guys blow their loads faster. Oh yeah, they can also sing.
This show is sold out but I’m sure there will be scalpers skulking around.

FREE HAMBURGER AT HARVEY’S DAY

Biking people make some nooooooooiiiiiiiiiiseee:
When I say bike, you say bell
BIKE- BELL, BIKE BELL
When I say Bloor, you say lane
BLOOR – LANE – BLOOR – LANE
Oh yes – it’s going to be one loud parade Sunday at noon. Last year there were 500 peeps, and this year they are aiming for 100 000 000!! (okay only 1000).
Bell-less bikes will get suited up – so you can ring ring your way all the way to Queens Park.
PEDESTRIAN SUNDAY in KENSINGTON MARKET
Buy some cherries and walk down the middle of the road. For a perfectly chill Sunday of casual run ins, trying on vintage clothes and sipping hot coffee. GIVE IT TO ME – TOTAL BLISS!
ALL WEEKEND LONG OPEN DOORS TORONTO!!!
With 150 buildings opening up, this weekend is FULL of discovery, architectural awe and curious fun facts. Walk and open doors by neighbourhood, plan a ‘green’ building tour, hit up all the religious spots, go where the animals are, historic, contemporary, an in depth tour of UofT – the options of how to pull, push and walk through doors are endless.
It was difficult – but I have narrowed down my top ten list – take it or leave it.
1. BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir and Canadian Museum of Cultural Heritage of Indo-Canadians
61 Claireville Drive
Have you seen this place from the highway? Do you know how many people worked to build it?
“Built according to the principles of ancient Indian Shipshastras, no structural steel was used in construction. Over 6000 tons of intricately hand-carved marble, limestone, sandstone and wood have been assembled to create an environment perfect for prayer, mediation and inspiration.” Doors Open 2008
2. The Walls of CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health)
The history of CAMH is incredibly interesting and disturbing. The surrounding walls were built in 1888-89 by unpaid patient labourers a the then Provincial Lunatic Asylum. It is a story of not only a building but also the way mental illness has been treated and outcast or integrated into our society over time. Visitors will be taken on a guided tour of portions of the wall during which the work and contributions of patients who lived and died behind this structure will be highlighted.
Event information: 30 minute walking tours of the historical wall. Tours go every hour on the hour from 10am to 4pm. Meet at the corner of Queen and Ossington, south side – outside the main doors of CAMH. For additional information please visit psychiatricsurvivorarchives.com
3. Gardiner Museum
A contemporary masterpiece that has added a lot of class to Ave and Bloor, and provides a terrific counterpart to the ROM.
4.The Flat Iron Building
No explanation necessary.
5. Malabar Costume Warehouse (also known as the Opera Department)
“Malabar Limited first established it’s Toronto operations in 1923. The Costume Warehouse (also known as The Opera Department) is home to over 30,000 historical period costumes which are frequently rented by opera companies across North America. The world of opera places its stories in a broad expanse of human history and place. Malabar’s costume inventory covers a wide range of historical periods – stretching from Biblical antiquity through to Roman, Medieval, Renaissance, Elizabethan, Cavalier, Baroque, Napoleonic, 19th century Romanticism and the Fin de Siècle of 1900. To create these magnificent pieces Malabar has benefited from the talents of many world-class costume designers—Canadian, American and European—all highly skilled men and women who have designed for some of the most famous opera houses throughout the world.” Doors Open Toronto
Event information: Guided tours by Malabar’s costume experts on both days.
Costumes from many popular operas such as La Boheme, Madame Butterfly, The Marriage of Figaro, Tosca, La Traviata, Pirates of Penzance and more will be on display, together with the designers’ original sketches.
122 Brock Avenue
6. Moriyama + Teshima
“Designed in 1966 as a “workshop for the mind,” the office of Moriyama + Teshima is an ‘urban oasis’ in the heart of Toronto. That the building was originally an automotive service station is fitting, as architecture is also a service business. Illustrating the transformative powers of good design, the service station is now a ‘staff-centered’ workplace, and the old grease pit is a shallow pool filled with Japanese Koi; a pool that transforms the foyer into a welcoming and meditative space. From the clamour of the City, visitors arrive through an ivy-covered arbor and iron gateway into a peaceful forecourt that features water, wood and stone in a lush setting. Designed as a transitional space, the stress of the city ebbs away as one traverses the forecourt to the large wooden office door. Inside the building, the design of the studios celebrates the uniting of people in a creative pursuit: there are no doors, no office cubicles. Instead, the studios are organized on multiple levels that overlap with interconnecting stairways and open views. Flooded with natural light, the work spaces are uplifting and invite constant interaction, fostering the collaborative philosophy of M+T.” Doors Open Toronto
Event information: Visitors to the office will have the opportunity to meet architects, discover our unique design environment and learn about recent projects. Designers will be on-hand to welcome and answer questions, and visitors will take away a ‘Discovery Kit’ we have created, an original and fun way to discover and explore nearby Moriyama + Teshima projects.
7. The Courtyard House
This is THE MOST AMAZING residential home that will make you divided by an open roofed courtyard
Please check out, I saw it last year and still can’t stop thinking about it.
8. The Brickworks
Bricks were fired up here for over 100 years, and now this interesting plot of land beside the Bayview Extension has been taken over by Evergreen. The site is being re-developed to become a multi-faceted environmental centre.
9. Horse Palace @ Exhibition Place
Touted as being the best Art Deco building in town!
Event information: Guided tours of the stable each half hour. Historical displays, photo’s etc… Police Dog will be stopping by at random times. On Saturday May 24th, there will be hourly riding demonstrations along with information session on police horses. On Sunday May 25th between the hours of 10am – 1 pm, the Toronto Police Mounted Unit will be holding their annual Mounted Police Obstacle/Equitation competition. GOVERNOR GENERAL’S HORSE GUARDS will give a “Skill at Arms” demonstration on both dates.
