Almost, Maine is a play about life, love and heartbreak, currently running at Tarragon Theatre’s Extra Space. Starring Degrassi’s Mike Lobel with a cast of phenomenal actors, this play is an intimate and entertaining look at romance at the top of the Eastern Seaboard. We sat down with actress Shanda Bezic at the cast’s favourite Dupont watering hole to talk about pre-show boogie dance parties, the Velvet Underground, and having too many feelings.

Bezic, glowing with energy, describes her fellow castmates with awe and enthusiasm. The group have worked together to create a show they’re all proud of, and supported each other in the process. When Bezic expressed discomfort with a certain scene at the end of the show, her fellow cast-members rallied. They all put on their costumes, took to the stage, and had a boogie-down dance party. This is now a pre-show tradition. So what does a talented actress on the verge do with her time when she’s not busy dancing? Take it, Ms. Bezic.

Where do you live?
In Cabbagetown. I love the mix of Regent Park, the Sri Lankan community, the hippies, and tons of old gay money. I also think it wins the green award for the whole city. The trees seem to come out here before anywhere else.

What was the last album you bought?
I have a record player-that’s how I listen to my music. The last record I bought was The Velvet Underground.

If there was a children’s book written about your life, what would it be called?
The Girl Who Felt Too Many Feelings.

Who is your real life hero?
My family. Is that cheesy? I’d say my mom, but then I’d have to say my brother, my sister, and my dad.

How do you take your eggs?
BENEDICTED! Poached, with lots of sauce. Scrambled is always good, too.

Do you have a 2010 motto?
Fuck it, let’s dance! I’ve decided 2010 is the year to take life by the balls.

What’s one bad habit you wish you could break?
Smoking, definitely.

If you had a time machine, where would you go?
To the ’40s. Then the 20s. Then the 60s. The forties would be great, on the verge of women’s lib. Then the 20’s would just be a great party. Then I’d go hang out in the 60s for a while and experiment.

What’s your favourite city in the world?
Dubrovnik, in Croatia. Second Florence, then Paris.

If you could compare yourself to any living thing, what would it be?
A young little crazy-ass monkey. Or a big, gigantic oak tree with roots growing into the ground for years.

Almost, Maine runs until May 15th at Tarragon Theatre Extra Space Tuesday-Saturday at 8 pm, with Saturday matinees at 2:30 pm. For tickets: www.tarragontheatre.com
