Our Idiot Brother, the feel-good comedy starring cool-kid celebrities, is the film equivalent of a giant bear hug from your favourite hippie. Paul Rudd plays Ned, a lovable organic veggie farmer. A tricky police officer plays on his good nature, convinces Ned to sell him pot, and arrests him. When Ned gets out of jail, his girlfriend has shacked up with a new man on their farm, and won’t relinquish Ned’s beloved golden retriever. Crestfallen, he goes to New York City, where his three dysfunctional sisters take turns taking him in and throwing him out.
Zooey Deschanel, Elizabeth Banks and Emily Mortimer play his sisters, and each comes with her own hilarious baggage. Natalie (Deschanel) struggles to reconcile her free-spirited nature in a committed relationship with her super-hot lawyer girlfriend, played by Rashida Jones. Miranda (Banks) is an ambitious journalist trying to move up the ladder at Vanity Fair, and completely incapable of admitting she’s in love with her downstairs neighbour. Liz (Mortimer) is a young mum trying to raise her kids in new age bliss, while her documentarian husband spends a bit too much time with his latest subject.
Enter Ned, who in his varying roles as a babysitter, driver, and dude sleeping in a blow-up boat in the storage space, turns their lives upside down. All while trying to make rent for the goat shed on the back acres of his organic farm. The resulting hilarity will leave you with a Rudd-esque permagrin: it’s good comedy that’s good for you.
