Jordan Whelan had to uproot his furniture and belongings three times while studying at McMaster University.
“I had nightmares about moving my furniture,” he said.
Every time he moved from one student house to another, he was not only forced to figure out how he was going to move everything, but also how to break down his furniture and then reassemble it.
“You’re forced to fumble around with obscure instructions and an Allan key,” said Whelan. “There had to be a better way."
And now he’s proud to say that his company has found a solution. Whelan is part-owner and marketing director for Our Paper Life, a company that has designed cardboard furniture. Their line consists of a desk (which can support 70 pounds) and a shelf (which can support 35 pounds). Each piece takes a total of four minutes to assemble.
“I really wish I had this as a student,” said Whelan. “It’s really neat."
The cardboard also has a water-resistant coating in order to repel any of those late night coffee spills. The furniture is produced locally and is 100 per cent recyclable.
“The other really great thing about it is that you can write on it,” said Whelan, who explained how students can easily make notes or pin things to it.
Geoff Christou is the designer of the product and former architecture student at the University of Waterloo. He was inspired after seeing his friend carry a heavy bookshelf for 14 blocks in New York City. “It doesn’t have to be a painful, terrible, exhausting, expensive and annoying experience.”
Whelan said the company is also keeping a green focus. 90% of the furniture is made from recyclable materials and all of it is 100% recyclable after it’s been used. In addition, all of their products are made locally.
And they’re not stopping at just a desk and shelf.
“We’ve been talking about additional products,” said Whelan, who hinted that there may be a table and couch made available in the near future.
But for now, the desk and shelf are being sold for $19.99 each.
