There is something truly mystifying about classic cars. Each one is a relic from an era of innovation and lawlessness, when automobile design was an art form above all else, when each vehicle was an expression of strength and character. Maybe this is why I spent the summer continually eyeing my friend’s new (old?) 1979 Plymouth Roadrunner, wondering where it’s been, and what it could possibly have seen during its 30 long years on the road.

This sentiment is perfectly illustrated in Drive End, the recent photography project by born and bred Montrealer Martin Beauregard, currently on exhibit at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts until September 19. Expect a haunting visual of broken wrecks within a stormy, Far West-themed environment, and combinations of unexpected subjects (a deserted drive-in theatre, anyone?), all of which fall together in a natural way. Undertones of abandonment and futility in each piece only heighten the intrigue – a show not to be missed!
