As huge fans of both Maggie Gyllenhaal (Secretary, The Honourable Woman, The Deuce) and Olivia Colman (Broadchurch, The Crown, Fleabag), this announcement got us very excited.

Based on the novel by Elena Farrante, The Lost Daughter is Gyllenhaal’s big directorial debut, and we cannot wait to see what chemistry occurs when the award-winning actor goes behind the camera to direct Colman, arguably the greatest actor of our time, in a haunting story about motherhood. Shivers.

Alone on a seaside vacation, Leda (Olivia Colman) becomes consumed with a young mother and daughter as she watches them on the beach. Unnerved by their compelling relationship, (and their raucous and menacing extended family), Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood. An impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences.

The powerhouse cast also stars Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson, Ed Harris, Peter Sarsgaard, Dagmara Dominczyk, and Paul Mescal.

The Lost Daughter will open in select theatres on December 17, 2021, and arrive to Netflix December 31, 2021. So now we know what our New Year’s Eve plans are.
