In the last few years, Montreal has become something of a cyclists’ paradise, with the addition of bike lanes galore, and of course, the ubiquitous, much-adored Bixi network. The biggest shift is perhaps in the profile of the typical cyclist. No longer the sole domain of spandex-clad athletes; the Montreal bike renaissance has seen style-conscious urbanites trading in their car keys and bus passes for elegant two-wheelers. No bike company has been more involved in the urban cycling movement than Montreal-based Opus Bikes.

Opus is behind the Urbanista line, a collection of slick, fashionable bikes designed with city biking in mind. I’m drooling over the Ivanna (Ivan for the lads), a retro-looking upright model inspired by the classic Dutch bicycle. Other designs from Urbanista’s collection include the sleek Lugano and classic Nuovella (pictured) as perfect for the workday commute as for a lazy ride to Sunday brunch.

In addition to being easy on the eye, these bikes are fitted with the latest technology, ensuring you can safely break in nasty weather and navigate potholes with ease. Opus also designs a range of tough road and mountain bikes for those itching for the open road or wilderness.
