Harbourfront and NOW Magazine Present Smirnoff Beats, Breaks and Culture 2010 with Rakim, Wu Tang Movies, Roller Derby and More

One of the best festivals of the summer, and recognized as one of the most influential music festivals in Canada, Beats, Breaks and Culture brings together international and Canadian artists to celebrate cutting edge electronic music and art. The theme of this year’s Harbourfront programming is global to local, and this year’s Beats, Breaks and Culture brings Canadian icons who have made an impact on the international scene together with artists from around the globe who have inspired Canadians. So who, what, when? Yeah, yeah, here it is!

July 9th
8 pm Blood On The Flat Track The Rise of the Rat City Rollergirls
Get inspired by these bad ass roller girls from Seattle.

9:30 pm Kid Koala & The Slew-Live
Six turntables vs. the ex-Wolfmother rhythm section. Bring earplugs, surriously.

10 pm Breaks, Beats and Roller Derby
The Toronto Roller Derby League has come to kick ass and take names! But they promise to keep it family friendly.

10:30 pm Rynecologist
One of Toronto’s favourite DJs, dude also makes movies. Did you know that? Now you do! Stop by The Brigantine Room and show him some love.

July 10th, 2:30 pm
12 am Rich Aucoin
Okay, so this is Friday night, don’t mess that up. Rich Aucoin has come to bring pop magic to your eardrums.

2:30 pm Pop, Lock and Load
The 7th year of this breakdance battle of all battles. Watch dancers from all over the world compete for the cash prize, and blow your mind. HOW DO THEY DO THAT?

3 pm Wu: The Story of the Wu Tang Clan
It’s Wu, motherfuckers. Stop by the Studio Theatre for a screening of this film, which tells the story of the group that took hip hop by storm.

3 pm Timeless: Suite for Ma Dukes (J Dilla)
Screening in the Brigantine Room, this film captures an installment of the Timeless concert series. The music of J Dilla was arranged to be played live by a 60 piece orchestra.

9:30 pm Rakim
One of the greatest MCs of all time, Rakim’s influence on hip-hop is almost immeasurable. Don’t miss an opportunity to see the legend perform for free.

ALL WEEKEND:
2 pm Break, Beats and Boogie Cuts
Free haircuts in the kids tent for one and all!
