Set on the hill in the Rio de Janeiro slum of Mangueira, The Samba Within Me is an intimate portrait of a resilient community. The camera follows characters down alleys, up hills, into kitchens and nurseries, all set to the sound that has bewitched their cultural imagination: Samba. One man, as he sits in his small home, describes their living situation like a TV set-no change between the bedroom, the bathroom, the kitchen. What is most striking is how the concept of happiness in Mangueira is completely disconnected from wealth or possessions. These effect quality of life, but not happiness, and the distinction will make you think.
