Instead of settling in for an AMC double header last night, we slabbed on some make-up and subwayed to Bloor and Lansdowne to play Battle Tag with a bunch of nerds. No, it wasn’t a bash to celebrate film but rather a chance for the high-rolling videogame geeks to remind us that that’s where the money is at. An intersection often associated with crack and donuts, Bloor and Landsdowne is about to get a makeover. Once a space where we used to attend bouncy castle rave parties, the studios on Wallace Avenue will supposedly house eight hundred Ubisoft employees. With the french company reporting over one billion in revenue in 08-09, the “revenge of the nerds” themed party is fairly accurate to life. Amidst the suspender clad, four-eyed Urkels, British model/rock n’ roll socialite Peaches Geldof joined DJ Vaneska on the decks while we got down with Down with Webster. After busting a move, we hit a smoky corridor to check out the big guns. Peaches Geldof went overboard with close range shooting and tweeted, “my technique involved strolling up to him and pointing the gun at his head. What can I say, killer instincts don’t work well in laser tag.” Although the last game we played was Super Mario Bros, we welcome Ubisoft to Toronto and look forward to the west end becoming less hipster and more geek-chic.
