Like a cherry coke with extra cherry, she bounces into the theatre with a smile and all the right moves. He watches every step and every bounce and thanks God for the gift of sight. Locked in tight, his eyes follow the curves his hands wish they could touch. She sits in the row across from him, knowing full well that her admirer will now be watching her instead of the movie.

As the lights dim, the trio of brooches strung upon her pale pink sweater sparkle, like drops of water under a rising moon. Her milk and honey skin compete with the glow of the silver screen and his pulse races. She casually shifts back and forth and reaches for her soda, slowly looking back. He waits patiently for the movie to end so the real story can unfold…

More than just a piece of jewellery, the brooch as an accessory seems to tell a story. The perfect compliment to a beautiful dress or sweater, the right brooch always seems to save the day. The appeal of the brooch also seems to lie in its versatility. Many brooches are commonly worn to the side, however they can also be worn as a faux belt buckle or at the back or front of a dress.

In the fifties and sixties the brooch was a mainstay in a woman’s accessory wardrobe. Back then; brooches were commonly worn to one side of a dress or cardigan.

Today, the brooch is enjoying a gradual resurgence. For his fall ’08 collection, Marc Jacobs revived the brooch and adorned everything from coats to dresses to handbags with art deco inspired pieces. Following suit, jewelley designer Alexis Bittar also created gorgeous Lucite flower brooches in deep purples and grays for his fall collection.

Often associated with news anchors or librarians, one brooch on it’s own can be a little too grandma-ish, so wear in multiple groupings, the bigger the better, and feel free to pin on just about anything!
