Trying to say something about the new Rodrigo y Gabriela album that’s cooler than the liner notes is close to impossible. Describing the inspiration behind the instrumental pieces on the album, each song is dedicated to an artist-and cites a meaning, from the Sanskrit word for the meeting point between three sacred rivers (Triveni) to a track named after the deity Hindus consider to be the vitalizing force behind the sun. (Savitri.) And vitalizing is an excellent way to describe the album. The Mexican flamenco-rock surges with power, and the album pulses with strength. It seems to wind it’s way around an almost troubadour-like narrative, and transports listeners to another place devoid of snow. When you’ve gotten past being knocked out by the overwhelming talent of the pair, your body will tangibly relax into the music.
