Where do girls belong? It’s simple: they belong in the seats of executive boardrooms, press rooms, senates, corner offices and courtrooms.

In celebration of the fifth International Day of the Girl on October 11, Plan International Canada’s Because I am a Girl movement is launching “Girls Belong Here,” an initiative to stand up for girls’ rights and show why girls belong in the leadership seat. A group of empowered girls from across the country is boldly challenging Canadian leaders to stand up for girls’ rights by giving up their decision-making seats for one full day.

So how can you get involved? From October 9 to 11, you can participate in a three-day “Girls Belong Here” installation. The unique installation features chairs that symbolize Canada’s decision-making seats, facing mirrors that allow girls to see themselves in those leadership seats. Participants are invited to take a selfie, holding up placards with belief statements and share their photos online to show their support for International Day of the Girl. They invite everyone – men, women, boys and girls – to stand up for gender equality and declare that #GirlsBelongHere.
