Canadian actors and brothers Shamier Anderson and Stephan James co-founded The Black Academy in  response to the scarcity of forums celebrating Black talent. The organization is dedicated to breaking down  barriers of discrimination and combating systemic racism in Canada. Yesterday, they announced an exciting partnership with Insight Productions, that will produce a live award show honouring established and emerging Black talent.

“The entire Insight team is deeply honoured and proud to work on this project and to  support the mission of The Black Academy,” said Shannon Farr, Vice President, Insight Productions, and executive producer. “Shamier and Stephan’s DNA is all over this show and this project is both a huge  opportunity and a welcome learning curve for us.”

The telecast will feature award presentations, performances, and tributes, and will showcase Black talent from across Canada. Right now, they are inviting applications for a Black showrunner and production crew, as well as a skills  development programme. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their résumés to  BlackAwardShowResumes@insighttv.com.

“In the Black community, we like to do things big, bold, and colourful – that’s what this show is going to be,” said Stephan James, Co-Founder of The Black Academy, and executive producer. “I think everyone will be truly amazed by what they see, but for those who aspire to work in this industry, the people behind the  camera will be just as impressive and inspiring. And it’s important to note that the award show is only one  piece of what The Black Academy is doing to uplift Black talent in this country. We’re also focused on  mentorship and education programmes, and we’ll have more to share about those down the road.”

Of all the industry news of late, this one brings the most promise for opportunities and change. We can’t wait to see how The Black Award Show shakes up Canadian film and TV. Submit your resume, and help be part of this groundbreaking event.
