This all-woman sketch comedy troupe is poking fun at the absurdities of office culture in their new sketch revue, Corporate CULTure. Legally Brown will return to the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival on March 8, as part of the festival’s International Women’s Day celebration, and for an additional show on March 11.
Saba Akhtar, Jacqueline Ashton, Yazmin Butcher, and Kirthiga Rajanayagam make up Legally Brown. What began as a writing circle with four members seeking creative community evolved into a comedy collective rooted in laughter and accountability.
The four performers come with a combined 10+ years of experience in directing, writing, acting, and producing in various productions and local arts organizations, including The Second City Toronto, Sweet Action Theatre, and Bad Dog Theatre.
Ahead of their performances at TOSketchFest, we caught up with Legally Brown to hear more about how they came together as a sketch troupe, their comedic style, and the office shenanigans we can expect from Corporate CULTure.
We’d love to hear more about your origin story! How did the four of you come together to form Legally Brown?
We started as a writing circle! All of us needed a space where we could have undivided attention to our personal projects. We always joked around during our meetings and toyed with the idea of starting a sketch troupe together. Serendipitously, a fellow comedian, Curry Bradshaw, reached out to Yazmin asking her to perform in her variety show, Bradshaw and Frenns. Yazmin asked the rest of the group if we wanted to try performing as a sketch troupe. And the rest is Herstory!
What was your first show together like?
Saba: It was magical! For me, it cemented that we could really be something great together. I remember being really nervous and then we were on stage – it all clicked so well.
Yaz: I had just gotten my wisdom teeth out and was in a lot of pain, but I was more excited to be performing sketch on stage as a group. The adrenaline got me through it and the laughs and support we received after was all I needed to confirm that we had discovered something special.
How did you land on the name Legally Brown?
Kirth: We had to quickly come up with a troupe name for our first show, so we were all pitching ideas. We were in the pocket of pop culture references and wanting to flip the script as diverse women of colour. It came down to an offer from Yaz, which was 3Tops1Bottom and one of mine which was Legally Brown. Thus, Legally Brown was born! Who knows though, maybe there’s a life for 3Tops1Bottom we haven’t explored yet…
You each come from different backgrounds in comedy, writing, acting and producing. How do your comedic styles mesh with each other?
Jacquie: Individually, we’re such powerhouses in so many ways due to our unique skill sets. This definitely makes for an eclectic blend. We’re constantly learning about each other and how to best collaborate on the meshing of each other’s comedic styles, which is part of the fun journey of creating with a group.
Kirth: Our individual comedic styles not only have the space to exist but can expand which is important. Each of our perspectives helps inform how we’d approach a character, or set up a sketch, and that’s a unique position to be in. We figure it out as we go, but I’m in awe of the talent everyone possesses and how we continue to elevate ourselves!

What can audiences expect from your show, Corporate CULTure, at TOSketchFest?
We poke fun at the absurdity of office culture and how it feels like everyone is in a drab middle management job these days. Instead of a revue of sketches, this is all contained in the world of Brown & Co. with four distinct characters. It’s The Office, meets women of colour! It’s a show full of pop culture references and cultural commentary — a Legally Brown specialty.
Can you give us a quick intro to each of the characters?
Linda is the loyal executive assistant to the elusive BIG BOSS at Brown & Co. She’s the oldest employee, but just as spry and active as any of the other ladies; “Linda’s still got it!”
Bria, the most recent hire at Brown & Co., is the company’s Social Media Manager. After being trolled online for “lacking rizz” and being a “cheugy millennial,” she takes matters into her own, vape-filled hands.
There’s Sandra, possibly extraterrestrial, Marketing Head who’s just trying to orient herself on planet ear– I mean… at Brown & Co.
And of course, Sonia, the nurturing Finance Director who juggles three young boys, her husband, a chaotic office, personal turmoil, and existential dread after receiving a cryptic email from the Big Boss.
What are some reactions you’ve received to the show?
Our first run of Corporate CULTure was a sold-out variety show!! It took place in a non-traditional comedy space, at It’sOK* Studios. The audience fell in love with the four main characters we developed (and played throughout the entire show). They loved how the world of Brown & Co. incorporated the featured acts (local stand-up comics, improv, and fellow sketch troupes) as characters in this corporate world. Some friends, who may or may not be biased, said they wanted to see more of the Brown & Co. ladies, so we’re just trying to give the people what they want!

Who are your comedy inspirations?
Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Quinta Brunson, Issa Rae, Robin Thede, Black Lady Sketch Show, Nathan Fielder, John Early, Tim Robinson, Sam Richardson, Cole Escola, and Julio Torres. So pretty much everyone!
What is making you laugh these days?
Jacquie: The TV show I Love LA by our queen Rachel Sennott, Hannah Einbinder’s show, Everything Must Go, watching Veronika Slowikowska on SNL, and Sketch Party, a monthly show at Comedy Bar Bloor that we will be hosting in May and August!
Saba: I’ve been reading The Idiot by Elif Batuman and it’s been making me laugh out loud — so good. There is this StraightioLab Book Club episode with Jo Firestone that had me cackling and I’m now dying to read her book Murder on Sex Island. And recently I went to a Sketch Party show and loved all the acts! Sarah Conway, Joy Provision, Two 2 Mango, Nkasi Ogbonnah, and Gag Reflex all gained a new fan!
Yaz: Smiling Friends (adultswim), anything Julio Torres and Cole Escola do, hopefully the UK edition of SNL and the Toronto comedy scene (Sketch Party, Monster Island, Laugh Sabbath)!!!
Kirth: I’ve been re-watching Abbott Elementary and Schitt’s Creek (rest in peace to the iconic Catherine O’Hara), love me some Ego Nwodim on SNL, Romesh Ranganathan, Ramy Youssef, Mo Amer’s comedy special Wild World, and the hilarious troupes from Sketch Party!
What’s your one-line pitch to attend a Legally Brown show?
You’ve been summoned by the court of Legally Brown, to attend one of our comedy shows in 2026. Failure to attend will result in missing the funniest sketch show in Toronto!
The Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival runs from March 4-15 at The Theatre Centre and Comedy Bar.
