The Bang Bang Club is an amazing film set in South Africa just before the fall of Apartheid. Newcomer Greg (Ryan Phillipe) joins a gang of photojournalists from a Johannesburg paper who take their lives into their hands when they enter the townships during violent altercations, to capture a true picture of what is happening in their country. From its opening scenes, the film illustrates the thin line between life and death, and right and wrong, faced in South Africa during this time. While the images captured by the young men are considered too gruesome to publish at home, they are championed by their photo editor (Malin Ackerman) and picked up by the international press, and covers, Pulitzers, and accolades follow. But self-doubt is never far behind, and the things they have seen, coupled with the persistent anxiety over whether or not their photographs cross moral lines, haunt the men throughout their careers. Full of disturbing violence, passionate humanity, and capturing the incredible dichotomy inherent in the beautiful and turbulent country of South Africa, this film is a must-see at the festival.
