TIFF Cinematheque Summer in Italy is running now until September 5. This 26-film series is a great “staycation” activity and a crash course on Italian cinema for beginners. It’s also a great opportunity for those familiar with the films to enjoy them on the big screen. This deluxe series of Italian cinema classics features several restorations of key films by such masters as Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti and Roberto Rossellini.

Screening on Thursday, July 18 at 2 pm is The Fiances (by Ermanno Olmi), which tells the story of two Milanese fiancés whose strained relationship is tested when the man accepts a new job in Sicily. Olmi’s deep humanism charges this moving depiction of ordinary men and women, and the pitfalls of the human heart.
