Offering duck confit and Summerlicious with dignity

by Taylor Berry

I was a bit apprehensive about my Summerlicious reservation at Trevor Kitchen and Bar for a few reasons. First, it was a reservation with my recently-ex boyfriend, which could make for a potentially difficult evening. I envisioned tears ruining my sweet corn and sage risotto. The second cause for my nervousness was online reviews warning that Summerlicious attendees were not treated as well as other patrons, getting rushed through their meal or treated discourteously. The only thing that could make a bad night worse, I thought, would be being treated poorly by even my server. Thankfully, my fears were completely unfounded, and rather than being the stuff of nightmares, the evening was pretty close to perfect.

I attribute the night’s perfection largely to the food. The fabulous choice of appetizers led my companion and I to debate over who would order what so we could both try more than one. He got the sea scallops with corned beef hash and black truffle mustard, I ordered the ricotta gnocchi with wild leek butter and chevre noir, arguably the better of the two dishes. We also spent time debating over the sweeping wine list, with a girth that rivaled my paperback copy of War and Peace.

My entree was a superb duck confit served with a homey risotto, and I bullied my ex into ordering the pork and beans made with suckling pig, truffled navy beans and chorizo. I ordered a crème brulée for dessert but felt I should have ordered his strawberry tiramisu. Aside from the fabulous food, the restaurant also had the star-factor going on, and I was distracted from my duck confit as I spied on Ben Mulroney wandering around the restaurant.

I couldn’t have hoped for a better night at the very hip Trevor Kitchen and Bar. The cozy atmosphere combined with the pleasant staff made it a great place to stay to chat and finish our bottle of wine–we definitely weren’t rushed out. And, at $35 a plate, the price for the evening was unbeatable. I highly recommend Trevor Kitchen and Bar for Summerlicious next year, and as a great restaurant to return to any time for the perfect night out with a friend.
