What You Can Learn About Sorority Row Star Rumer Willis in Under Ten Minutes

From trashing twitter to dancing all night with Gaga-Rumer Willis is making a play for the spotlight to the left of her famous family’s shadow, with the help of Audrina’s boobs and a whole lot of fake blood.

It was the day of the 2009 MMVAs and the same suite at the Park Hyatt Hotel that would later host Taylor Lautner’s press interviews now entertained Audrina Patridge and Rumer Willis, stars of the slasher flick, Sorority Row, which opens in theatres across Canada next week.

Both were dressed demurely enough, given the boobs ‘n blood imagery of the flick. “Audrina wore some pret-ty sexy outfits,” Rumer reports.

“Yeah, I wear this really sexy white lingerie – and it was freezing cold!” Audrina concurs.

“But it was really nice lingerie,” says Rumer.

“Yeah, too bad it got ruined with lots of fake blood and stuff,” says Audrina.

Later, huddled around Rumer with two other journalists, she explained that her own character was not so much the sexy lingerie-type. “I’m sort of the nerdy, good girl. My character tries to be the voice of reason, but she’s also kind of a pushover.” Which, in back-to-school slasher movie world means she’s just as hot as the others… but she wears cute glasses and it might take a little longer for her to reveal some good heaving cleavage.

Relaxed, polite and demure, Rumer entertained questions she’d surely answered about three or four times already that day. Then came the trouble. One reporter asked her if she Twitters. Her answer was “No.”

“But,” I piped in, “Ashton Kutcher’s got Oprah Twitter-ing and you’re not into it.”

“They’ve found something that works for them and that’s great,” she says, referring to mom, Demi Moore, and mom’s husband, Aston Kutcher, “But I’m just not into all of that.” (Though she does have an account under TheRue which appears to be authentic and gets updated relatively frequently. But I digress…)

“So, how do you feel about your whole family watching this film, does it ever make you nervous?” I continued.

“Okay, that’s it!” says Rumer’s publicist, in an ‘I’m gonna shut this down’ tone of voice. “No family questions.”

It’s not as if I’d asked her if she’s ever felt tinges of a crush for her hunky stepdad. Still, a line had been crossed.

As the child of A-listers, someone like Rumer must draw that line if she ever wants to stand on her own. Some celebrities are more willing to talk about their famous families. But let’s face it, how much do we really want to know about Lionel Ritchie’s life? Bruce Willis, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher on the other hand….

So, Rumer’s got a little more work to do in order to step out of those megastar shadows-and her publicist has to stand guard to prevent media ADD from steering the focus away from her client.

And so, for the remaining five minutes of our group interview we turned our focus back to the 21-year old starlet to talk more about Sorority Row, her tenth film (how’s that for stepping out). The film is a loose remake of the 1983 movie, The House on Sorority Row, only this time it’s a prank meant to teach a cheating boyfriend a lesson that goes awry. On the topic of cheating boyfriends and whether or not they should be taken back, Rumer is a firm “No”. “No way,” she says. “I don’t believe in second chances when it comes to that.”

On braving the cold weather/skimpy clothes combo during shooting, “That’s what we signed up for… I loved working on the movie and being on set, so it’s all good.” She says that the themes of sisterhood in the film played out in real life as well because of the mutual respect between hard-working young actresses.

She said she hadn’t yet figured out what she was going to wear to the MMVAs that night and she cited comfort as a priority, casually saying, “It’s going to be a long night… I want to have a good time.”

Later on in the evening photogs snapped her dancing on the bar with Lady Gaga in a supertight black and metallic lime green minidress and Louboutin gladiator sandals. And that’s the thing about Rumer – her approachability and casual class make you forget that she’s bonafide Hollywood royalty. She’s more action than talk, more work than hype. And just in case if you lose sight of that, she’s got a helluva good publicist to set you back on track.
