From a Greek epic to Elle Woods’ origin story, July’s new releases have a little something for every kind of movie-goer or streamer. 

Alongside The Odyssey, and Elle, the highly anticipated Legally Blonde prequel, other big releases this month include Olivia Wilde’s couple dramedy The Invite, and crime thriller Lucky, based on the bestselling novel by Marissa Stapley.

Some beloved series will also come to a close this month, with the final chapters of Heartstopper and Michelle Buteau’s Survival of the Thickest arriving on Netflix.

Elle

Survival of the Thickest

Get ready for the third and final chapter of Michelle Buteau’s beloved scripted comedy series, Survival of the Thickest. This season, Mavis Beaumont is working hard to grow her brand as a stylist and designer, bringing her all the way to Paris (with quite a few special cameos!) As her relationship with Luca evolves, she’s determined to not only survive, but thrive—with the help of her chosen family.

The Invite

Olivia Wilde directs and stars in this dramedy about two couples and one fateful dinner party. In The Invite, (also starring Seth Rogan, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton) Joe and Angela’s marriage is on the brink of collapse. As they invite their upstairs neighbours over for dinner and the evening spirals to unexpected places, will this be the thing that reignites their spark, or the match that burns it all down?

Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass

Zoey Deutch is having a moment, and her latest film will show off another side of her star power. Just weeks away from marrying her high school sweetheart, small town hairdresser Gail Daughtry is betrayed when her fiancé sleeps with his “celebrity pass”. Determined to even the scales, Gail sets off on an epic journey to Los Angeles to find her own celebrity hall pass: Jon Hamm. Along the way, Gail and her friend Otto collide with celebrities and even Italian assassins in her search for the elusive star.

Lucky

Based on the bestselling novel by Marissa Stapley (a previous SheDoesTheCity Artist of the Month), Lucky tells the story of a young woman who has left behind her life of crime, but must embrace her darker side one final time. When a multi-million dollar heist goes sideways, she sets out on the run, fighting for life—and a way out. Anya-Taylor Joy leads this limited series also starring Timothy Olyphant, Annette Bening, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

Ride or Die

Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham star in this action-packed comedy series as best friends Debbie and Judith. The Heartstopper saga will wrap up with a dramatic finale film this month. Steal Away

Angourie Rice stars in this psychological thriller from Canadian director Clement Virgo that first premiered at TIFF last year. Steal Away tells the story of Fanny (Rice), an awkward teenage girl living in an isolated bubble of wealth when the charismatic Cécile (Mallori Johnson) enters her world. Lust and jealousy arise when Cécile falls for Rufus, the gardener’s son. But despite the dangers brewing around them, Fanny and Cécile are drawn to each other, forming a strong bond that helps them fight against the powers that be.

The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan takes on an epic adaptation with The Odyssey, bringing the ancient Greek tale to life with a stacked cast, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, and Elliot Page. The film will follow Odysseus on a dangerous voyage back from the Trojan War, as he encounters creatures like the Cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, and Calypso along the way.

Antidiva: The Carole Pope Confessions

In this cinematic tribute, director Michelle Mama shines a spotlight on a queer trailblazer. Fearless and unapologetic about her sexuality, Carole Pope broke barriers as the lead singer of the new wave band Rough Trade. Featuring interviews with celebrity friends like Peaches, k.d. Lang, Jann Arden, and Jeanne Beker, this documentary (fresh off screenings at Hot Docs and Inside Out) celebrates a Canadian icon who reshaped rock’n’roll. In addition to the CBC Gem release, watch the film in select Canadian theatres this July and premiering on documentary Channel on July 19.
