My Secret Weapon

Elise Nagy

Elise Nagy

Where you live: Dundas, Ontario
What you do: Sales Representative at Mickey McGuire's Cheese
Favourite places to shop: South Beach, Miami and Aritizia.
Music you can't stop listening to: Kid Cudi
Perfect Friday night: A little bit of daytime shopping and then nighttime partying.
What is your secret style weapon? Colourful headbands when my hair gets out of control.
Where did you get them? From everywhere! I got this one from a friend. But you could say the flea market because that's where it's from and makes me sound cool. Haha!
Why do you love them? Because they're colourful.
If you lost them, you would...: Feel helpless.

No, I do not speak of rims - though little else compares to the thrill of a free donut in the drudgery of these drippy March mornings. I speak of pant legs - and how with a swift flick of the wrist and a well-tuned eye to detail, you can totally transform your trousers (not to mention make a triple alliteration). As the sun starts to take over winter's turf, we'll all be itching to slip into those loafers/moccs/flats/sandals/etc. And while it might be jumping the gun a little, you can get away with showin' off those ankles (or slick new shoes!) if you cuff your pant legs a little - so relaxed. So chic. So non-chalant. Denim, khaki, dress pants - you name it, you can roll it.

City Scents

Scent can be such a major memory trigger. Think about all the fragrances you used to wear, if you smell them now they totally bring you right back to that moment in time when you originally wore them. I could come up with about three solid examples right now, but I already see a distinct pattern between roller/lipgloss combos and boyfriends, and I don’t need to go there. Memory evoking fragrance is exactly what Christina Burgess, owner of Augustina Boutique in Toronto, had in mind when she created a trio of Private Label Eau De Parfums with Perfumer Susanne Lang. read more...

Spring 2010 Trends

Spring 2010 Trends

By Becca Shrimpton

Take note from the s/s runways and latest celebrity style to achieve the look of the moment. This season, it’s easy to exude major on-trend beauty with a mix of hard and soft; toning it down in some areas and amping it up in others. It’s this marriage of contrasts that are so choice for spring.

Big Braid
A side swept, loose, oversized braid is so appropriate as the warmer weather hits. As seen on Nicole Richie and Christina Hendricks , and on the runways of Alexander Wang and Miu Miu, this over-the-shoulder look requires you leave your hair pretty much in its natural condition and let pieces naturally fall out. So low-maintenance, touch-ups are hardly required.

Bright Nails
Nude nails aren’t totally out of the picture, but now the thing to do is draw attention to yourself with look-at-me-nails that give a super powerful hit of colour. You can go with a bright or neon hue of whatever you’re into, like the intense candy green seen on Brittany Gerena and Nina Dobrev. Bonus points for a polish with glitter. read more...

For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow: Dr. Martens Celebrates his 50th

For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow: Dr. Martens Celebrates his 50th

by Elli Stuhler

We young and invincible folk are quick to associate fiftieth birthdays with comb-overs and “it’s all downhill from here” jokes. Looking at the fiftieth anniversary collection, it looks like Dr. Martens has dodged any metaphorical hill, has a head full of hair (a mohawk, we like to think) and is still trotting into the hearts (and onto the feet) of youth subcultures everywhere.

The Doctor had a little gig in Toronto to show the media their fiftieth anniversary, summer and even fall/winter collections at the Windsor Arms Hotel - and oh! - the things you can create from a simple boot. It may have started as the eight-eye 1460 boot, but the Doc has since sprawled in all directions. 12-eye? check! Buckles instead of laces? High heels? Check, check! Metallic, velvet, floral? Check, check, check! And not a comb-over to be found! read more...

Trench coats show the rain who's boss

Trench coats show the rain who's boss

With warm, happy weather it’s finally time to put those parkas away.

Until it starts to rain again, that is. We all know how the saying goes and until May flowers start to bloom it’s best to hide from the rain in one of the many trench coat designs that are ubiquitous this spring. read more...

Celebrity Dress-Up: Academy Awards Edition

The number of sleeps until the Academy Awards are limited! Who will clean up? Will Avatar do as well at the Oscars as in the box office? And what will everyone be wearing!?

Okay, simmer down. We took a little trip to the Holt Renfrew flagship in Yorkville to take a look at some of the Oscar-worthy dresses they had to offer. A wild game of celebrity dress-up ensued. And for your viewing pleasure, we put the dresses on Oscar himself and we think he looks great. read more...

Bookhou Moleskine Notebooks!

Bookhou Moleskine Notebooks!

by Annie Webber

Ah spring!  Count how many times you've heard the happy trills of upbeat youth this week and you might just go blue in the face.  And as the children of sunlight pour out onto the streets, double shots on ice in hand and bare-legged once more, it's time to step up the game a little.  Enter pocket notebooks!  With the weather in our favour, field trips will become daily events, and documenting the finer moments is an art not to be ignored.  So say bonjour to beautiful booklets - and lasting memories to boot!  Try this little baby on for size - Bookhou's hand-printed moleskines ring in at ten bucks a pop, but it's worth the splurge.  The books are quite exquisitely made, with a little pocket in the back for tucking in scraps of memorabilia, and they're little works of art, too.
