A new documentary is taking a deep dive into the fight for women’s pleasure and sexual health. The Pink Pill: Sex, Drugs & Who Has Control tells the story behind Addyi—a drug also known as the “female Viagra”.

Determined to bring the pill to market, entrepreneur Cindy Eckert put up a decade-long fight, facing countless roadblocks, restrictions, and gender bias from the FDA, while similar drugs for men were approved with ease. In 2015, she finally won approval for Addyi before its billion-dollar sale. But beyond Eckert’s story, The Pink Pill captures the ongoing fight for bodily autonomy and equality in the healthcare industry, spotlighting doctors, scientists, and advocates who are demanding change and pushing back against pervasive gender biases.

Award-winning Canadian director Aisling Chin-Yee (No Ordinary Man, The Rest of Us) brings this boundary-pushing documentary to life. “We hope the film sparks a powerful conversation about the urgent need for equitable healthcare.” said Chin-Yee. “I am thankful for the trust that I was given by the people I spoke to in the making of this film, and proud to spotlight those who challenge the inequity and systemic bias against women’s and marginalized bodies’ needs, especially in something as fundamental as sexual health.”

Joanna Griffiths, President and Founder of the pioneering Toronto-based intimates brand Knix, serves as an executive producer on The Pink Pill. The film marks the first project from Docs for Change, a new collaboration between Knix Fund and the Toronto-based, women-centred studio Catalyst. Griffiths and her fellow executive producers Julie Bristow and Abby Greensfelder shared that they hope the film becomes “essential viewing” for those passionate about healthcare and gender equality.

Women’s sexual health and female pleasure have long been overlooked by the medical system, and society at large. Films like The Pink Pill are bringing these issues to the forefront, and taking the first step towards changes that could touch the lives of women around the world.

The documentary will have its world premiere at DOC NYC on November 15, and it is set to release in Canada on Paramount+ in early 2026.
