Although women make up 51 per cent of the visual artists working today, the level of representation in the art world does not reflect this. Only four per cent of the artists featured in the Modern Art section of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art are women, yet 76 per cent of the nudes are female.

Girls, Girls, Girls – running until March 6 at Northern Contemporary (1266 Queen St. W.) – is a collection of contemporary feminist art and celebration of the impact it’s had on the cultural arena and role as social vanguard for gender equality. The exhibition creates an unbiased space for these artists to react to the feminist issues that affect their day-to-day lives through a wide range of mediums.

Coinciding with the exhibition’s launch, Northern Contemporary will be hosting an opening reception this Thursday from 7-11 p.m. with several of the artists in attendance. The gallery will also be hosting a series of workshop and networking events aimed at promoting discourse and dialogue for female artists, so stay tuned to their website for more details.
